No undead/elf/human sieges?
« on: August 01, 2015, 12:02:09 am »

Hi all,

I've been playing DF for around two months and I wanted to see some more !!FUN!!, so I did a new embark next to a necromancer tower.

Before the end of the first year I got an announcement about an undead siege: the necromancer himself (a dwarf) appears with a couple zombies and wander around the south-east of my moat. After a while he and the zombies go away without attacking anyone.

The fortress is already 7 years old, and I'm hoping to see more !!FUN!!, but all I get are small goblin raids from time to time (biggest was about 40 goblins). Any idea on why they're not showing up? I'm also ceremoniously killing every non-dwarf caravan and diplomat that shows up, and these humans and elves don't seem to take the hint and keep sending me free merchandise every year.

I would REALLY love to see some big sieges, because I have captured a bronze colossus and he's waiting in a cage outside the fort. Every time there's a megabeast or forgotten beast I close the fort, pull the lever that releases it and have lots of fun seeing it throw goblins around in the air. :-)

You need to let one escape -- otherwise the civilization has no way of knowing that you're the one responsible for the caravan not returning.

Is this biome reanimating? I really don't want to know what happens when "absurd numbers of megabeasts" is combined with "reanimating biomes".

That makes sense. Thanks, next spring I'll let one run away.

Still wondering why the necromancer or his zombies don't show up, though. I made lots of traps and towers especially for his armies..

If you want to anger the elves, you have to offend their ethics, not yours. To them, murder is justifiable, but cutting trees isn't. Sell them wooden products for a few years and see what happens.

Thanks, I've done just that:

- Started making wooden crafts, just for them.
- When the caravan showed up, designated all the trees along their path to be fell down. The dwarves in the screenshot below are on their way to pick up the logs.
- When they arrived in the depot I offered them some wooden crafts in exchange for some animal cages.
- When they refused I seized the cages
- Killed two of the elves and let one escape

Hopefully this will provoke them into sending some fun stuff. My fort is way too calm lately. :-(

You know people are talking about DF 2014 when they WANT things to come and kill them.

Still no luck.

The fort is now in its 12th year. Wealth is 17.7 million with 146 dwarves.

For the last three years I've offered the elves wooden items, then killed all of them but one and let that one run away.

These stupid elves just sent another caravan. They don't seem to be getting the message.

Humans stopped coming after 3-4 destroyed caravans, the biggest siege was just around 40 dumb goblins (no trolls with them), and the necromancer nearby doesn't seem very interesting in paying a visit.

DF2014 is a bit boring. :-(

Hmm? Nobody mentioned the changes to how DF2014 generates sieges in this thread?

Before, siege invaders were magically conjured out of thin air once you 'qualified'. Now those invaders have to be born (usually during world gen) and then physically march to your fort. This in turn means your fort is 'competing' for sieges with other sites - even though yours might be richer and closer, invaders may decide it's more worthwhile to attack somewhere else.

But fear not, the HFS is always there for your !!FUN!! quota. Megabeasts too unless they all died out in world gen.

Congrats, Psieye. This is the first time I've seen a derailed thread get put back on the rails.

You can always try out mods that add extra enemies. Even if individual enemy civs are laggardly in sending invasions, if you mod in enough of them, they should hopefully spawn at least a few sieges aimed at your fort.

And I'm going to throw in my usual quip that Toady thinks the next release will fix the no-sieges thing (caused by an army pathing problem, he thinks) - in addition to a lot of other cool stuff with temples, libraries, and taverns - although it probably won't do anything about siege size. I don't know why the necromancer isn't attacking you - he's probably either too small or attacking someone else, I guess. Normally they're guaranteed fun.

The only other things I can suggest are clear cutting all of your trees repeatedly to piss off the elves (I know this works; there's a tree cutting treaty game mechanic), and possibly leaving the corpses/skeletons of the previous merchants in the trading chamber (not sure if that works, but it will definitely make the individual elves very unhappy, unless there's some ethic that makes it so it doesn't.) Other than that...try making the merchants other bad offers (just insultingly unfair trades) before you sieze stuff? It may be that so little value is in play (only 3 elf merchants with carts) that the civ doesn't care about their lost items, but will take offense to one more offensive thing you're doing on top of the rest.

It seems pretty erratic. I had a fort not long ago that got sieged twice in 3 years by undead. The second one must have had at least 30.

That was probably it. In my search for fun I embarked next to a necromancer tower, and there were also elves and humans nearby.

I've started a new fort in a less crowded location. This time I'm getting very satisfactory sieges at least once a year. The goblins are bringing lots of trolls and even some humans. My trapped passage is happy. :-)
