Windows 10, can you download it and not update?
« on: July 31, 2015, 01:17:14 am »

I basically have absolutely no choice but to get Windows 10

Which... due to my psychic ability of "Knowing the last few operating systems and what PORTS are (Windows 10 is a mobile port >_<)" there is a very good chance it will be horrible...

The information is incredibly vague...

Can you download Windows 10, reserve the update... and then... Never update to Windows 10?

I've been using Windows 10 for the past few weeks and it's great.

Do you mean for a PC or a tablet?

For PC.

You seem to be confusing it with Windows 8, which is for tablet.

Windows 10 is for PC, but it can run mobile apps.

I assume so, but can't confirm personally. Currently I'm in the "upgrade reserved" category but can't download yet. I assume once it's my turn in the queue I'll be prompted to install rather than wake up one day with it installed.

Also, the update will continue to be available for free until July 29 2017. So no need to rush. And according to the FAQ, once you've upgraded, they track the hardware and supposedly you can change OSs or revert the update, and then reinstall windows 10 at a later date without even needing to enter a key.

Can you elaborate? There must be some other option. Even if you're unable to get a new Windows 7 machine you could always get a Mac instead or remove Windows 10 and install Linux in it's place; or you could get a secondhand computer. It's also my understanding that here's pirate versions or Windows 7, and better yet Windows XP, floating around, but I lack the courage to seek them put for myself.

I'd get two USBs, put all of the personal data you want to keep from your machine on one, and turn the other into a Linux Mint Pendrive. If ragnarok comes, you'll be prepared. But seriously, it just an OS upgrade.

Win 10 has actually a good chance of not being shit, believe it or not. Good and bad Windows OSes come in waves. See, Microsoft just treats it's users like Beta Testers. Vista was shit, everyone ranted about it, and then lo and behold came 7, which was embraced because of all the fixes from everyone's complaints. Same thing with 8.1 and 10.

Yes, it's possible. No need to reserve it, even, if you go to Microsoft's site there's a download. The reservation stuff is, at least as far as I know, for people to get it in the Windows update queue.

But yeah, you can store it. I've got a flash drive with the installer, so far used on 4/5 of the computers in this house (and the results, so far, are positive - a few bugs, but it did just come out, what do you expect?).

My PC is also a room warmer in winter and my tablet could be a plate for food. Neither is good at it.

By sheer chance I happened upon a microsoft store the other day. I asked about this. They claimed that reserving a download is all you need to do. That enters your hardware into their database. You don't need to run the update. You don't even need to download it.

I absolutely love Windows 10. I went from 7 to 10 and, apart from the redesigned "Start menu", it's really intuitive and fluid. It just feels more responsive and apart from that, games seem to work better as well

Pros:
Basically Windows 7 with a custom skin, unwanted Metro features and Multiple Desktops.

Cons:
   Still can't completely purge Metro
Have to turn off ALL of the unwanted privacy invading tracking nonsense (No Microsoft, I don't give you permission to track my every key press).
Have to reboot about 5 times after upgrade before all functionality actually works. My start menu didn't work for a long time for no apparent reason. Apparently is common issue.
Just gonna say it, Edge is an unstable piece of shit. Not even what I'd expect from an IE12 even, it's actually just a really bad web browser. Sure it's good for ES6 support, but the actual design of the UI is just terrible. Chrome has done the same UI but better for years now. Crashes less frequently too. Hate hate hate hate hate.

My only issue with 10 is how incompatible it is with everything else (And apparently this was a intentional move by Microsoft)

AFAIK Windows 10 will run on anything that will run Windows 7 or 8, excepting Windows RT devices (because Windows RT has been discontinued). It's the same for software - all software that ran on Windows 7 or 8 should run on 10. It's even the same for drivers...
