We should also try to develope smell, that way we could more actively find food and avoid predators, assuming we don't already have smell.
inprove our digestive system by developing a series of specialized organs instead of just one.
1+
attempt to develop smell and improve digestion

I don't think we can just "Increase our numbers" the problem is we aren't getting enough energy, that's why we are increasing digestion and adding smell, to become more efficient at eating, though maybe trying to upgrade reproduction would help.

Also, how close to the surface are we? Because one of our unique characteristics is chloroplasts, which would work better the closer to the surface we are.

Try a reproductive method based on growing baby organisms attached to us and releasing them

Attempt to hunt the outcompeters.
1+ make our species more suited to this by developing a way to detect the presence of our competitor by its excretions also increase the potency of our stingers venom

Develop a pheromone that binds to the outcompeter's pheromone and makes it unusable.

What exactly is it that's killing us? is the water too warm, are the chemicals jacking us up?

I think the problem might be on a cellular level, but I can't figure it out.

Our membrane is still basic, it's probably about time to upgrade that.

Try to strengthen the cell membranes to give us greater control over what enters and leaves them.

Also, I don't know enough about biology to be super specific, but try to develop more efficient organelles and create new ones to take on more specialized tasks, if anybody that knows more about cells wants to help be more specific, feel free.

Also, you missed my earlier suggestion.
Also, form our cells into more compact strands, instead of unorganized mass, this should give us greater strength, as well as finer control of individual movments.

Right, we may want to do something about the "primitive pseudo-mitochondria" then. Seriously that's two negative modifiers on our main source of energy.

I assume that we have some bacteria as symbiots in our digestive system helping us to process food, so I propose the following:

Try to completly take a living bacteria in one of our cells and try to implement transport proteins in its membran supplying it with oxygen and sugar, and to transport ATP out of it.

If we have no bacteria in the digestive system, one could also take bacteria from the outside, but since we have "skin" I would prefer it the other way.

Do we have to evolve adavanced processes like the citrate cyclus or is that too specific?

I would also suggest to develop lipid synthesis and storage when we have more energy available. Might help for producing offspring.
