Or you could put water in the area above the caving ceiling, and magma below the floor.  Pull the lever, water crashes down, goes through floor, hits magma, BAM!  Instant obsidian souvenirs that menace with spikes of tentacle demon.

The hall has multiple z-levels, so flying creatures are likely to survive.
I'd make it a single-level death room, with two hatches in the ceiling. One hatch holds back magma, one holds back water.
Drawbridges rise to block the room, and the liquids are introduced into the sealed chamber.

The trick with that kind of setup is that, to get a room full of obsidian, you really need it to be full of magma first, and then distribute water in from above. Otherwise the magma meets the water and at the border, an obsidian wall forms which separates the magma from the water. This can be very annoying to clean up after!

That said, you could probably set up some magma/water traps to lock in the demons, since they can't tunnel; at that point, you can leisurely work on filling in the gaps with magma and then building a firehose to encase them.
