Don't worry, unlike other shmucks, I actually will be making the tower taller.

Just popping in to mention that I'm not dead, but the last two days were a little busy. I'm still playing the save, though.

Well can't just be me, Cheese and RedMageCole doing the dying all the time.

So there I was, minding my own business, when I get a summons from the queen.

"Not my wife?" I ask, seeing as she is generally the one that goes there with all the official business, whenever the queen is upset that somebody's been slacking off, but no, she wanted me, specifically.

Turns out, she wanted me to run the fortress. Can't imagine why, even my fields don't have a single straight line in them. I till them because I have to, but I'd much rather be writing poetry.

He has a great affinity for language and a feel for music, but he has a questionable spatial sense, bad intuition and a poor memory.

Still, what the queen wants, the queen gets. And the queen wants the tower made taller.

    "Taller?"
"Yes, taller! Did I stutter? Taller!
You know, higher off the ground? Increased height? TALLER!
"Okay, okay, I'll make the fortress 'taller', if that's what you want.
But why me? What was wrong with the other guys you had running the place?"
"Those treasonous idiots? Come, I'll show you."

She brought me out to one of the (thankfully) few open terraces we have, and gestured outwards.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Tell me what you see."
"Uh.... I see a little bit of forest, and behind it, the ocean, off in the distance. Now can we go? I get vertigo"
"No that, you numskull! the towers.
The towers that are not this tower.
The towers that those bastards made for their own amusement instead of making this tower taller like I told them to."
"Oooohhh.... those. Right. So you want me to not do that."
"Yes, finally, you get the picture. Now go."

Right. So she wants me to make it higher off the ground.
I guess I can do that.

(To be continued tomorrow morning. Gotta head to bed)

(...Continued.)

    "Taupe!"
"...yes?"
"The queen has assigned me as the new overseer. Gather the miners."
"oh no... Yes, Sir! What should I tell them to do?"
"Dig out the ground underneath the tower. All of it."

(To be continued...)

''So hum, I hope you're not planning to just carve out the whole ground and add new levels underneath the existing ones...''

''...''

''Cause as a mason I have to say I'm not sure that's how towers actually wo--''

''Just do it.''

Needless to say, that's a really cool dialogue format.

Note though that right now stonesense has a bug, so some dwarfs will show up funny unless you modify "stonesense\creatures\large_128\dwarf.xml" and remove every instance of 'special="Normal"'

"So how is the digging going? Have we reached the water yet?"
"Uuuhh... we've barely broken the surface."
"What? How? we have so many miners. What are they all doing?"
"Only two of them are actually mining, sir."
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"We have plenty of picks, don't we? Pass them around to all those useless layabouts we have."
"Are you sure that's a good idea, sir?"
"Of course it is, now get going."

"Okay, what the hell is this?"
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"It's the depot you ordered, sir. To replace the one we tore down?"
"I get that, but why is it on top of my hole?"
"That's where you ordered it made, sir."
"Obviously not, I would never do such a thing. have it moved."
he has a questionable spatial sense, bad intuition and a poor memory.
sigh "I'll have it moved, sir."
    "See to it."

"I heard a scream. What happened?"
"One of your new miners let the floor collapse, and him and a bunch of dirt fell into the old well."
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
"Isn't the manager supposed to stop these things from happening? Go deal with it."
"But I..."
    "Go."

"I just got the news. What happened?"
"We have too many miners working here, and most aren't very smart.
They've been digging out the ground beneath each other's feet, and a few dwarfs fell into the water and couldn't swim."
"Then why do you have so many people working there?  Go fix it."
sigh

Some dwarf really loves his crossbow.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

With the arrival of summer, progress is going well, I can say with good authority that the tower is most certainly higher off the ground. I am confident that her majesty will be pleased.

RIP Hiddenleafguy. You should've gone On Break when you had the chance. Alas, the joy curse of a miner is that one tends to be digging his own grave most of the time.

...

How'd he even drown anyway Japa? Based on your pics it looked as though the aquifer should freeze as soon as the tile gets exposed.
