Ash dropped her hips and shoulders, stabbing up into the dummy with the blade in her left hand.

"Then you can use their momentum against them and evade their attack in the same movement. Against a dummy, there's only imagination, no actual reaction or tension. It's... difficult."

: "It's still a vital part of learning the art of war. However, if you truly wish to practice against a flesh-and-blood opponent...how about a spar?"

Hildebrand leaned his lance against a convenient wall and grabbed a practice lance instead. Basically nothing more than a long stick, really.

[SeriousConcentrate]

Alyssa sheathed her blade and took a practice one as well.

"One doesn't often fight spear-using bandits. This will be novel."

As well as difficult... I'll have to get past his reach advantage somehow.

: "Unfair, I know. On the other hand, most bandits carry axes which can easily knock my lance aside. You cannot always count on having the advantage."
Now watch as I get beaten by this young woman. Sir Gilbert would never let me hear the end of it, if he found out...

Hildebrand hefted the lance and moved in, stabbing directly at Ash's stomach.

Ash moved back and to her right, evading the blow but bringing her no closer to the cavalier.

No choice but to try to rush him down.

So thinking, she darted in, trying to move in a zig-zag pattern to make it difficult to stab her.

(So according to the OOC we're letting Uxie roll the spar? I'm fine if so, just not entirely clear on which it is. )

The girl was clever, and that was good. She was also quick, which was also good (except for him in this sparring match, anyway; speed wasn't exactly his forte). Hildebrand backed away slightly, swinging his lance laterally, hoping to catch her with the shaft and maybe knock her off balance.

((Up to you, mostly. I know we both have to work long hours sometimes, and I figured Uxie could use some practice before we get into the first real fight. If you'd rather RP it, I'm game. It'll just be a bit slow ))

It took him longer than a few moments to realize that all of his arrows were currently embedded in the target and he sheepishly walked over to retrieve them.

Speed wasn't enough to counter the veteran's reach and experience advantages. After about twenty minutes - during which she had landed maybe one blow for every two of his - she was forced to concede defeat.

"If you're as good on your horse as off it, then we're lucky to have you along mister Hildebrand."

Her ribs and her pride ached from the loss, but it wouldn't do to be uncivil when she had asked for the spar.

Theor had already stopped practicing and had been resting at first, then watching the sparring match when it started.

"It was a good match."

[SeriousConcentrate]

"Yes, he fought well."

[GiglameshDespair]

"Noice fight. Bet you're feelin' a bit bruised, or is that just yer ego? Heh heh." she grinned to show it wasn't meant too harshly.

"You see through me, I'm afraid. I was hoping to perform more evenly..."

Hildebrand slung the practice lance over his left shoulder and extended his right hand towards Ash.

: "That was well fought. You've got some real talent there, if you continue to work at it."

Ash took it with a firm grip.

"You can count on that."
