dead pets?

I've had an elven caravan arrive with what looked like empty cages at first... but when viewing the cages, each of them had a dead pet in it! two of them were mules, one a hoary marmot... so what happened here? did they starve on the way to my fortress? Did they freeze to death (it was spring but the water didn't thaw yet)?

Yup; bug 000466.  The elves are pretty high and holy, but have no ability for introspection.
