Man are you insane?
I thought it was normal.
At any rate, I'm afraid there isn't much we can do to improve performance of Dwarf Fortress. By all means, close all other programs that need a lot of CPU and memory, but terminating system services doesn't sound like a good idea. After all, those several processor cycles you save by closing explorer translate into maybe half of a frame in DF.
herrbdog, if killing explorer doubled your FPS, then you probably have some serious problems with your system.
I should probably mention, that if your DF map doesn't have much weather, setting WEATHER:OFF in the init.txt really helps FPS without affecting gameplay at all.
As for me, I've been running DF fairly successfully on Vista laptop with a 1.8GHz AMD Turion X2. Vista doesn't suck as much as I expected it to, nor is it very slow when it comes to CPU (just don't use Aero under ANY circumstances), and while I can't boast about having multiple cores each strong enough to split atoms in twain, I can harness some decent framerates: 30-40 FPS on a map of default size going up to 50 with weather turned off; with a small map it's usually at full speed all the time, even with a very populated fort.
