NEARLY DOUBLE FPS!!!
« on: November 27, 2007, 11:34:00 pm »

No guarantees it will work for anyone else, depending on your machine's configuration, but go into task manager, kill EVERY task except DF and essential machine processes. Most importantly, KILL EXPLORER.

I run DF, and DF only (on 2kpro) NO browser, NO winamp, NO start menu & taskbar.

You can rerun explorer to get yer start button back. In task manager, go to File->Run, run "explorer".

In a 3x3 map, with chasm, ~25-30 chasm critters, 36 dwarves, ~20 assorted animals, no magma, brook only, no waterfall. One year in, moderate development. With nothing running, but WITH explorer running, I get 70-100 FPS (fluctuating). Once I kill explorer, it goes to 150-200+ fps.

I have game FPS cap set to 1000, and G_FPS set to 20. Intel 3.2 Ghz HT Prescott.

killing non-essential programs is always a good idea. Killing explorer is not (though, it probably won't break anything). I tested it anyway, and didn't get any fps increase at all from killing it.

Would be interesting to hear if it helps anyone else - you should not see a big FPS gain unless explorer is using alot of system resources, and normally it won't be. Maybe it was something else you had running (winamp?) that sped it up?

Only variable was explorer. P'haps in 2k explorer uses more resources? (I have been doing this for years for most games, never had a problem.)

Then again, this install is running on 3 years. But I don't install anything but direct applications. I don't keep any resident programs running. I'll make & post a screenie of my process list.

ok, a few residents:
ati2evxx = vid driver
cli = vid driver control panel
ctsvccda = creative mp3 player service
PPPoEService = network conn (my router died  :confused : )

everything else besides DF i can't kill (except explorer.)

I think my record is about 15 hours. Reminds me strongly of Baldur's Gate, with its health warning regarding sleeping and eating on one of the loading screens...

Ulib Dwarfguy has been unhappy lately. He is worried you haven't been getting enough sleep.

I *suspect* that with XP, many of the base explorer processes (monitoring disk activity for updates, streaming data, monitoring devices...) do NOT exit when killing explorer. With 2k, I am pretty damn sure they do.

I'ma have to try this at work now (xp machines... blargh).

And, yes DF was running 12 hours straight. I was at work most of that time. =(

And not that it matters to anyone, but, to me:

2kpro >>>>>>>>>>>>> DOS 6.2 >> OS9 >> commodore 64 >> OSX >> XP >> windows 95

Linux & Unix would be so damn far to the left, that my keyboard would break making the ">"

Edit: BRAG!

I once had my IDLE counter over 2500 hours, of IDLE time.

I think your list is pretty incomplete. DOS 7.2 was better than 6.2 and Windows 98 was way better than 95...

Not to say that comparing a computer with a commodore is like comparing apples and oranges... Both fruits, completely different.

tee hee.

soon as the boss leaves, i will do a test here at work.

I don't get an FPS boost. But that's probably because I have four 2.4 GHz cores. I'm folding proteins while playing :P

The intel HT chips are dual-core chips. it probably also helps that I set DF to CPU 0 only... that was not a variable in this test, i always set DF to only CPU 0

I do want to try assigning all the OS processes to CPU 0 and ONLY DF to CPU 1... see if that works. I doubt I can even reassign CPU affinity to OS processes...

Agh, sorry, I am thinking as I type...

I'm also still using win2k.

I've had to fix my dad's winxp one too many times to use it myself   :p
