Dwarves have genders???

Yes! You can use this to tell which gender to put in the military. If you have a female in the military they get an additional shield toward their defenses called an "Infant." This shield soaks up stray bolts and attacks for the soldier dwarf! Useful!

Yes, but it's considered impolite to reveal them. In fact, much of dwarven courtship consists of delicately figuring out whether the other dwarf is actually of your preferred gender.

An all female start is rare...but There has only ever been one embark with all male dwarves, the first embark when Aulë used his chisel and hammer to create the first seven dwarf fathers. And after thousands of years he sent them on an embark to the Blue Mountains of middle earth where they founded Belegôst.
But I doubt that would ever happen these days, after all, back then dwarves and elves were friendly on occasion and elves weren't treehuggers. *GASP*

If i remember correctly, Migrant waves are now pulled from historical pops, does anyone know if the same happens for starter 7?  If so might it be possible that more male dwarves die over history since they don't have a baby shield?

Original 7 are created from scratch, I also don't think that baby shields work in worldgen.
