An all female start
« on: July 23, 2015, 06:36:29 pm »

When I embarked, I realized that all of my starting dwarves are females. I googled it and didnt find any similar case. Maybe it's a bug or something like that?

And yes, I am new to the game.

If you flip a coin seven times and it comes up heads each time that's not a bug it's just a thing that happened.

Unlikely but not impossible!  1 in 128 chance, assuming the male / female likelyhood is equal.

Dwarves have genders???

Yes! You can use this to tell which gender to put in the military. If you have a female in the military they get an additional shield toward their defenses called an "Infant." This shield soaks up stray bolts and attacks for the soldier dwarf! Useful!

useful in the short run of a battle of course. but when the female elite powerhouse axedwarf goes berserk from grief after watching her child get ripped apart alive by zombies....

Just splash some mist on her face and give her a good meal and she'll forget it ever happened. Even get some handy tragedy training out of it.

I've never experienced that, but I have noted that on average more than half of my Dwarves are female. I'd guess that at minimum 65% are always female even if I use startdwarf to embark with 10-20 Dwarves.

In my experience there does seem to be be higher odds of females at embark than males.
I've had all female occasionally and normally have 4-5 females and 2-3 males. Never had all male though.

Of course you want a higher number of females than males, to ensure breeding. A lot of little Urists have to be made in order to meet the level of masterwork sock production the mountainhome expects of you.

I can't remember perfectly, but I think it was something regarding dwarves becoming pregnant outside of marriage, just from contact with others.

Anyway, according to the raws the ratio of male:female should be 1:1, simply because both are using default pop ratio. You flip coin a million times and you might wind up with 499,981 heads rather than even split, though. If there's really something up and that's not working as intended, science must be conducted and a bug report written.

Took a fresh vanilla game and aborted 10 expeditions on a pocket world, got 37 males and 33 females. The deviation doesn't seem large enough to imply anything screwy about the ratio.

I think that bug was about dwarves breeding like animals, meaning that any female would get impregnated by any male on map via magical spores, as often as possible. Fun times.

My fort of that time had about 100 children out of 200 total citizens, but I didn't mind as I was starting to experiment with "Dwarven Child Care" at that point. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade; when DF gives you children, make an army of unstoppable killing machines who eat demons for breakfast.
