Rocket League
« on: July 22, 2015, 09:27:49 pm »

I'm surprised there isn't a topic on this incredible game yet.

Quote from: Store Page
Soccer meets driving once again in the long-awaited, physics-based sequel to the beloved arena classic, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars!

A futuristic Sports-Action game, Rocket League, equips players with booster-rigged vehicles that can be crashed into balls for incredible goals or epic saves across multiple, highly-detailed arenas. Using an advanced physics system to simulate realistic interactions, Rocket League relies on mass and momentum to give players a complete sense of intuitive control in this unbelievable, high-octane re-imagining of association football.

Basically two teams (varying between 1 to 4 players each) attempt to get the ball into the opponent's goal. However, you are using an arcade-style car able to jump, double jump, 'dodge', and most importantly, boost. This allows you to do amazing things to impress your friends or make them laugh at you. It is a game which is simple to learn, and yet will take you months, years perhaps to master. Anyone could probably enjoy playing, either casually in unranked matches or competitively in the (currently under revision) ranked matches.

If that wasn't enough to sell you, this game has hats.

Oh now you're interested huh?

Rocket League was released earlier this month and is available for PS+ members for free, so if you have a PS4 go ahead and pick it up while you can. It is also currently available on Steam for ~20 money. In addition, there is cross-play between PS4 and PC so lots of people can enjoy the game even if they happen to have different systems. Currently it is impossible to create a team cross-play, but matchmaking is working. They are Working On It™! If you are not planning on playing with friends, playing online, or just want to play against bots you're unfortunately going to be disappointed, as the singleplayer aspects of this game are lackluster. However if you have one to seven friends you will undoubtedly have a blast, especially if microphones are involved (and perhaps other things if that's your style). A controller is highly recommended if you are playing on PC. The huge success of this game pretty much guarantees that as time goes on more and more will be added to the game, so expect the game to evolve further down the line (but hopefully not change the core mechanics that make it so enjoyable).

If enough people are interested in playing together perhaps we can set up some matches, or join up against randoms in matchmaking.
If there's anything you want to add to this OP go ahead and tell me and it will be appended.

As someone who loathes sports, I'm in love with this one.
Of course I'm pretty terrible but the amount of fun I'm getting out of playing it with friends is amazing.

I've seen this before one time and yepp, great idea! Cars and bouncing balls. Looks like a lot of fun. That is an awesome looking ball by the way, and nice screenshots/promotional shots otherwise as well.

I was planning on waiting to bump this until a significant update was released but there's a (small) sale going on Steam at the moment. It's currently 17.99 USD (click for all currencies) and while it's not exactly a large discount I feel this game is worth the full 20 dollar asking price to begin with. There is also an optional DLC that adds some cosmetic items, but unfortunately no Delorean or anything cool like that (yet). I've seen a few people from Bay12 playing the game already, and this is the lowest price we'll likely see until the winter sale.

Still wish they would do a free weekend.

(There's also some promotion regarding Steam hardware but I don't really feel that's relevant...)

Other than my USB mouse and keyboard failing to keep connected and the weird matchmaking, I love this game. I think this should fully replace regular soccer in real life.

So, a few things were released today. One was Just Cause 3. Another was Dwarf Fortress version 0.42.01.
Then there's Rocket League 1.10.

Coinciding with the release of an optional DLC pack with cosmetic items, this update features a slightly unconventional arena with more sloped sides than a 'normal' pitch, and the DLC cosmetics go along with the wasteland theme. The image above shows off the curved edges of the stadium. In the future I expect even more stadium variations to pop up.

For those that missed it earlier, they also released a patch a few weeks back which introduced mutators into the game, allowing you to play with a few custom settings such as gravity, ball bounciness, boost recharge speed etc. along with a few preset mutator modes available in random 3v3 called 'mutator mashup'.

On December 14th they will release a hockey-themed update, which will replace the ball with a hockey puck, but that's all I know about it so far. Looks like they might have a new winter-themed arena in the works to go with it.

Rocket League was on sale a few days ago for Black Friday, but if you don't mind waiting it's a safe bet that it will go on sale yet again later this month during the Steam Winter sale.

I will most likely try the new update tomorrow!
This game is great, haven't played it in a while but I shall change that. Actually I did play it briefly not too long ago... I think I just forgot about it in the flood of other new games I've been playing recently.

It's here.

It is surprisingly fun. It also aids me in figuring out flicking the ball/puck away from the wall!

Currently there's a free weekend going on Steam, so if you've been hesitant to purchase up until now then you can get the game for 40% off. If you're still not sure, then now's your chance to at least demo the game while you still can.

In terms of actual updates, here's what you can expect in the coming weeks.

Rocket League is a seriously fun, intense, and rewarding game.

A normal match is so action packed that most of the time you don't even have a chance to trash talk which really cuts down on the troll and asshole comments.

There is some paid DLC but it is only skins and flags and, importantly, it is stupid cheap like 1.99 for the batman car.

The worst I have run into is that some times really good players will make new accounts and completely destroy you. It is like a completely different level of play for those guys. That happens rarely though.

One final note... I don't like or follow futball or hockey. I have never watched a car race. Rocket league is still a blast.

Tried it out in the free weekend, ooof definitely funner than I expected. Very tempted to grab it since I have a little bit of spending dosh due to a birthday gift, still very much on the fence however and will probably see if the charm wears off at all towards the end of the free weekend.

So I managed to get around to trying this game.  Crazy fun.  If anyone still plays or wants to go back to playing, hit me up on Steam.
