How do you feel about the use of guns in this setting?

We know how to make them and they're useful, mainline production.

Yes there is. You just overclocked a 3000-year-old non-carbon-based semi-eldritch uberbeing as far as it could possibly go while simultaneously draining all the heat from its nervous system analogue. There's a reason every magic-sensitive organism on the planet felt the backwash from that spell. It is now winding back down to something approaching the human brain's level of operation.

There's more information, but it'll be more interesting to let you find out in-universe.

Also, completely outside of how much sense it makes, I don't have any idea what it all was, so you wouldn't be getting anything useful out of it.

{I don't comprehend the wikipedia quote either, don't worry. My knowledge in those areas is more limited than I would like, so if nothing else I won't truly be able to hold an argument about advanced computing.}

I'm thinking of dropping in at some point, but to be honest I'm still a bit overwhelmed even after following the updates for a bit. Not that I'm unused to RP, just that you guys tend to take it a few dozen levels of complexity past what I have dealt with in the past. Any advice?

Also, what characters are active at the moment?

I think you can mostly ignore the really complex bits, they're mostly us figuring out a way to regulate our own natural powergaming tendencies. I can't say I have any good advice beyond to play smart, which should basically be our motto.

Characters;
 
Net Patham, TheBiggerFish's character, is a war-technomancer from another universe. His "Pet" is a self-aware magical construct in the shape of a winged snake.

Blaze the Elf, EndlessBlaze's character, is a human from Earth who got transplanted into an elf, he does runic magic and blacksmithing. The same player has a side character or two whose names I'm inept enough to have forgotten.

The player Dustan Hache controls a necromancer presumably of the same name, we don't know much about him yet.

[REDACT], known as Amp, is my GMPC from before I became GM. Also a transplanted Earth Human, this one in a dorf. He does mechanical engineering, chemistry, and firearms. Also some physics of various sorts, not very practical here. He currently exists to provide an excuse for the world to have more advanced tech than default DF. I the player control literally every NPC.

Captain Sarvesh is the current NPC military commander of the fortress.

The Forgotten Beast known for now as Skalewyrm is a twenty-meter winged snake made of living steel covered in sawblade-feathers which is capable of using various breath attacks, from a short-ranged jet of plasma to a stream of liquid metal and a few things in between.

A being, place, faction, object, or [REDACTED] in a general eastern direction from the fort, referred to as Out East, is causing a severe drain in the Geothaumic Field, crippling every magic user on the planet's access to external power. Out East is probably the Big Bad for now, and no, they aren't on your side, whoever you are.

If there are more details or characters I can't think of them right now.

{I moved this list to the OP as well, because it's useful to have and I can update it later.

Also, my most recent post in the main thread explains as well as I can how basic noncombat gameplay works, and you won't need combat knowhow for the next four or five days.

I'm afraid I will be disappearing sometime tomorrow, but if you can get it up within the next twelve to fourteen hours, I'll likely be able to respond. You don't need stats or anything, just an idea of who and what you are and can do, which can be expanded later. If you like you don't even have to be on our side.

I think I'll just play a miner/mechanic. I'll have him mine for stuff and help out with the construction of projects, though he's not an expert machinist or thaumaturge or anything of that manner. Where should I point him?

It's mostly built around a central hallway, showing up there to say hello is pretty much always valid.

Oh yeah, how metal-rich is our environment? For example, is steel a precious commodity, or is there enough for every dwarf that would reasonably be exposed to combat to have some armor?

Fairly metal-rich, full plate is restricted, but helmets and chest armor are pretty readily available, plus tough leather protective gear for the rest of you. Also, crude sidearms, either single-shot heavy guns {Sorta like a sawn-off, can shoot flares, scattershells, slugs, and some specialty stuff} or revolvers, have been mass-produced.
