How do you feel about the use of guns in this setting?

We know how to make them and they're useful, mainline production.

They seem out of place and run rather counter to a fantasy setting, avoid them.
- 2 (16.7%)
Get outta here, nerd, nobody finds guns that interesting.
- 1 (8.3%)
Go ahead and have the NPCs make em, but not worth player input.
- 1 (8.3%)
Support, but they shouldn't be the standard weapons.

Dang it Amp. Now you make me want to do a tech thing and figure out how to temporarily supress magic use in a small area. I can't make up my mind! OH NOES!

Suppressing magic is probably better left to a Niven's Wheel or something.

(If you're not getting my reference, it's based off a thing called a Warlock's Wheel that Niven came up with.)

I didn't get it at first, google is useful though :)

Sounds like it might work, actually. Once Out East stops doing whatever crazy magical things it's doing, it might end up being useless due to much higher mana levels though

A Warlock's Wheel would work perfectly well, if you want to build one. Keep in mind that some entities provide their own power to an extent.

Probably more useful in some situations to just use up all available power for one spell, since you actually get something out of it.

[SCIENCEY-REDACTED] being something quantum?

Quantum effects could do some interesting things too.

I reserve the right to call it a Niven's Wheel.

I think it'd be interesting to see what happens if we bury one or two. I'm thinking they'd take out the magic in the area for no obvious reason, and mess with anyone trying to attack us :P

For a very obvious reason-they're designed to.

I guess it depends on how magic works. . . I feel like you could probably take a magitek device of some sort to pull energy straight out of the air. A big thing is how energy costs for magic are determined; I'm thinking of the bit in Eragon where they use magic for weaving lace, because it's something that takes a lot of time but little actual energy. It takes a really, really tiny amount of energy to move particles, the problem is generally aiming them. Hence the superpowerful magnetic fields basically hoping that they can get them to smash together by restricting where they can be, or the lasers that agitate everything enough that they collide fast enough to fuse.

At least as far as I know. I do realize that overcoming the electromagnetic repulsion also takes a lot of energy. I wonder if my time would be better spent trying to split smaller atoms with magic? idk.

The energy cost is simply the necessary energy to complete the task, with some added for inefficiency's sake. For more nebulous tasks, like enchanting, teleportation, and other semi-inexplicable majykal stuff, I'm mostly going for what seems right.

So, yes, it doesn't take much energy to move atoms around. Of course, getting a great deal of precision might not be the easiest thing, and the aforementioned magical laceweavers didn't disable the battle-mages when they worked overtime.

I think the idea of splitting larger atoms is that they require less energy to split, there sometimes being enough distance in the nucleus to avoid/weaken the Strong Force. I have said at a couple points that it'd be easy enough to, say, convert some antimatter into being. Not to contain it or survive doing so, though.

Antimatter is fairly high on the list of things I don't want to fuck with.

Indeed. On the other hand, a lot of other things are both more usable and probably easier to do.

which I believe Gwolfski is currently writing the book on, would make just about everything a lot more doable.

How did you guess? I thought I didn't mention it.....

Antimatter is fairly high on the list of things I don't want to fuck with.
I think you should

You said you were developing steam technology, and working on the theory of the thing rather than a more-advanced but nonreplicable prototype, so the best way to do that usefully is to write a book.

You are correct, in fact I have a description of it ready soewhere.... It is slightly more easier to play DF than find stuff in my room, it's all a large stockpile/library/garbage dump zone.
