They're in worse situation though. If it's hot, you can generally take off your clothes and use the snow you still have on you to have water (KONSTANTIN THE BEAR GLORIOUS ABS OF ARSTOTZKA), if you're cold though, you can't exactly do anything with their shitty rags to make them warmer nor you can drink sand.

Yes, with advanced stuff (Kevlar* or other aramids EG) probably costing more oil. Things like composite tank armor with a significant rubber component might also trade ore cost for oil cost.

*Yes, I know Kevlar is pretty well out of our time frame.
