Prologue: The Wolf Howls

Meles, a town located on the Sanctuary-Thaus border. A town of trade and commerce that has only continued to grow in recent years despite the numorous troubles associated with being a Thausian border town, such as extremist terrorists and regular bandit raids. Due to Meles' location relative to Pasive, few trained soldiers are permanently stationed there despite the ever present risk the town faces; the few that are stationed there are trained not in battle but in identifying and swiftly removing terrorists, though they are able to repel the raids with help from the local militia. Because of this civilian casualties are increasing, a problem that can't simply be overlooked. In order to prevent more deaths the mayor has begun hiring mercenaries, be they veterans or greenhorns, to pick up the slack. It seems to be working for the time being.

The sun shone overhead, centered in the vast blue sky. It was noon, or close at least, and what had become routine for five individuals had just started: patrolling the streets of Meles. For today's patrol Lestat, Hanna and Andala had teamed up and were patrolling the upper level of Meles while Aenbarr and Elysia had teamed up to search the lower level of the border town.

Meanwhile a lost looking woman wandered the streets in search of something called money. She'd arrived just today, perhaps a little more than an hour ago, and had taken to wandering the streets. As she headed down an alleyway she could here muffled voices coming from around the corner. Whatever it was it seemed to be getting heated as the two parties had started yelling at each other.

//Elysia Iände, Hanna Eringrad, Lestat, Larini Araneidae, Aenbarr Creidhne Mawr and Andala Jardin de Roy are in!

The spider was hungry. She'd found herself in what must be a city - it was many times larger than her clan, that was for sure. She cocked her head at the sounds of arguing.

She went around the corner.

Hanna continues on the patrol route, alert for any disturbance.

So bored...

Aenbarr patrolled with Elysia in his monstrous form at a leisurely walk gait, too proud to assume a human form but conscious enough to keep his pace at a speed that wouldn't leave his fellow mercenary behind.

Lestat was still trying to get used to the idea of working in a group that wasn't formed by other Gargoyle, and his quiet grumbles made his disapproval clear. Soon he stretched his wings just to give himself a boost for his jump, just enough to stand on a roof of a house to get a better view of the area nearby.

As Lestat lands he sees the same as Larini, albeit at a higher angle and out of earshot.

The spider was hungry. She'd found herself in what must be a city - it was many times larger than her clan, that was for sure. She cocked her head at the sounds of arguing.

She went around the corner.

The first thing Larini saw as she rounded the corner was a sandy haired man with his fists raised, glaring at something. He was a full-blooded monster judging by the ears atop his head. Following his eyes she sees two helmeted men holding onto a small black haired boy captive behind them. Unlike the blond man, the boy appeared perfectly human.

"I said let the boy go! He's an innocent child, one of your race even!"

"Why do you care, monster? We're just correcting his sin of interacting with beasts like you. Now, run along before we correct your existence too."

The boy was shaking in fear at this point and he let out a scream of terror as one of the men grabbed him and held him in place and nodded at his partner. The man raised his axe to bring it down on the small boy. Just before he swung down, however, there was an ear-splitting howl and in the next second there was a sand colored Mauthe Doog at his throat. The force of the impact sent him and the Doog crashing into the crate behind him; though the Doog was still latched onto his throat. With a strong kick to the Doog's stomach the man was free at the cost of his throat. While this was happening his partner released his hold on the child and reached into his pocket, pulling out a horn and sounding it.

"So it's a fight you want, mutt? I'll be glad to deliver."

The Doog just growled at him.

Seeing what had just happened, and understanding the howl as "I'll kill you" Lestat went to warn Andala and Hanna only to find them already descending the stairs to the lower level after hearing the howl even in the upper level. Chaos had unfolded nearby, the citizens quickly fleeing after hearing the howl and they were lucky they had. Armed swordswomen and axemen now stood in the trio's way.

Being nearby, Aenbarr and Elysia raced towards where the howl had come from, certain that something was wrong thanks in part to Aenbarr being able to understand it. As they neared the source Aenbarr suddenly stopped, seeing a suspiciously cloaked man and two pegasi riders near the wall. Elysia continued a little further, glancing down the alleyway and spotted a swordswoman sneaking towards something.

"What is happening?" Hanna says to Lestat, drawing her sword as she saw the armed men ahead.

"Another confrontation between races, apparently. And the blood of the innocent was going to be spilled. It seems we will have to put an end to this with our own claws."

Elysia took her time to browse through an exceedingly tiny tome which she always kept on person--a book of philosophical principles and the Pasivein disciplines, all fit in text smaller than a fingernail, and in a book as large as the half-palm of the hand.

When she first accepted this task, she had no idea that those with her were a very motley bunch--personally, they added to the fun. Getting to know Aenbarr was a blessing in itself.

A blessing that she dwelled too long upon to notice that she lagged a ways behind her merc-buddy. That was until after the recent events--she had to get to the scene quick!

{Still being fussy about mug} "Aenbarr, the noise came from this way. What's stopping you?"

The spider watched with interest, but her stomach rumbled at the smell of blood.

She thought of what her matriarch used to say.
"Remember, Larini. Humans are weak and foolish creatures. Monsters are greater, and we Bael the greatest of all. Trust none but Bael, as we alone are pure and follow the old ways."
That didn't really help too much.

Hmmm... perhaps if she attacked one of them the other would be grateful and feed her? The slight sound of scuffing feet on stone alerted her, and she turned. A rather unfriendly looking swordswoman was in the middle of sneaking towards her, and she made an expression of disgust at the spider's multiple eyes.

That settled that, it seemed.

"Hey, mister dog! There's a swordswoman sneaking up behind us! Don't worry, I got her!"

She turned and moved towards the swordswoman and changed. Her viewpoint much lower to the ground, her eight legs scuttled across the ground as she lunged.

12, 7, nom swordswoman

"...A fight is going on. And these people are suspicious." He then waved to the pegasus riders and the cloaked man, lifting himself on his hind legs - for little time, he wasn't made for that - and letting his forelegs' large hooves hit the pavement heavily so as to call their attention. "Halt. Do you know what is happening here?"

"Extremists. That explains the howl. Elysia, combat." The Tarvos was straight to the point, drawing his hatchet and starting to move towards the terrorists.
