Gareth had been keeping an eye on the child since he had left the company of the two doogs. The resemblance had to be in his head, right? There was no way he looked the same as his brother... And then he saw the mast starting to fall. Cursing under his breath, he sprinted at the child. Not again. He wouldn't let another one die when he could stop it. Lunging forward, he got a hand on the boy's chest and shoved as hard as he could.

Peter yelped as he was suddenly pushed back by Gareth and stumbled forward a few steps before he managed to right himself. He turned back to check on Gareth; however, before he could Jack grabbed him.

"Get goin' lad, ain't much left to see up here," Jack mumbled to Peter as he handed him off to one of the men. They were all running below deck at this point, trying to assemble the rest of the crew and their passangers before Jack came down.

Jack, however, looked over at Gareth's soon to be corpse. He'd been speared by the mast and was now pinned to the deck; there was nothing that could be done. Despite the obvious danger, Jack decided to stay up there for Gareth's last moments.

"I won't lie. I'm surprised someone like you had that in you."

Gareth coughed, a little bit of blood coming out as he did. He looked over at Jack and coughed again.

"Ha... least... least this way he'll... have a future. And... and I get to see Robert. Tell... tell Eneas I'm sorry I coul... couldn't help protect hi--"

The words cut off as the Sancturian breathed his last.

"Aye, I'll tell 'im that lad." Jack made his way down into the hold but not before sparing Gareth's corpse another glance, muttering: "Rest in peace, ya damned fool," while he slowly made his way below deck, the waves beginning to rock the ship.

When he reached the foot of the stairs, the crew and mercs were slowly trickling in; Peter had been handed off to Isaac and was clinging to him.

"Now listen up ya scurvy dogs and landlubbers! Our means of safe travel has officially expired and we may as well be good as dead at this point. I'm not sure 'ow long me ship'll hold up so if ya have gods you worship I'd start prayin' fer a miracle about now. And if ya don't have any o' those I'd be hopin' fer the luckiest break in your life."

Valerie was twisting her fingers around each other. That poor human. It was true she hadn't really gotten a chance to know him, but it was just so unexpected. Whoever he was, she felt, he must have been a good person to do what he did. She just wished she had reacted faster; maybe she could have done something in her monster form. She would never know, now. Instead she sent a silent prayer to Eclipse for the man's soul and looked around to make sure everyone else had made it down safely.

Pasco wasn't in the hold-- he'd never gone down there, seeing as he didn't give a damn about danger and seeing as he now had something of what he considered an important task.

He hadn't actually KNOWN Gareth that well. But he'd been the man he'd talked to the most, and for all the racism and seriousness Pasco had made a point to mock, Gareth at least seemed like a brave enough bastard... And this incident, the man's sacrifice, damn well proved it. Noone who faced mortal danger with bravery and sacrifice deserved to just be left there like that. Pasco had never stood for it. He hadn't stood for it when those crusaders had shot down Stefan, or Harys, and he wasn't going to stand for it with Gareth. Not after that.

Pasco rushed to the body, swearing under his breath as he looked at the dead man, and worked to try and extricate him from the mast, using his sword to try to saw away the wood piercing the corpse, and then trying to pull him away.
:"You brave son of a bitch. You brave son of a bitch. Damn it... you're getting a proper ceremony, I promise you that!"

A cold shudder like death struck through Eneas' body. Something grave and terrible had happened. Something was wrong. Something was very wrong. He didn't know and he didn't know why. But his heart was gripped with a quiet fear. Inexpressible agony.

He bowed his head. This... It wasn't supposed to be like this!

Eneas clasped his hands firmly. There was nothing he could do in body. Down in the hold, he knew nothing. There was a crash, a terrible splintering sound. Then there was nothing. But it was something. It was something dark, something terrible, something that never should of happened. He could feel it.

So he clasped his hands in prayer, knees slamming to wooden floor of the boat. Iris the Goddess of Man. Protector of Human Souls. Bearer of the Light of Man. His lips passes wordless words, but only his soul poured out above the din. In his heart, he begged. Protection. Protection for all people here. Life and light to all souls here till the day they are commended back to Her grace.

He clasped his hands. And prayed.

Rydell himself had yet to go down making sure that all those he was responsible made it down first. It was then he saw Pasco hacking away at the top mast with his sword and carefully walked over to him.

"C'mon Sactuarian, you'll get yourself washed overboard if you stay up here and continue to hack at that. He'll still be here after we make it through the storm. If we make it through it that is," he added grimly.

Valerie spotted the young silver haired human praying alone by himself. She remembered the human above had generally hovered around him like a guard dog of sorts. Was no one going to tell him? Maybe she ought to. She approached him quietly, then squatted beside him.

"Um. I'm sorry to tell you this, but... Your friend... The mast almost fell on little Peter, and your friend pushed him out of the way, and..."

She trailed off, looking down and away.

Thwack. Thwack.
:"The topmast might be here, but who's to say he won't be... broken off! If these are my last moments, I'd rather spend them out here trying to honor something than fucking cowering and waiting for the end!"
Nevertheless, he slowed down -- Rydell was probably right and he knew it. Damn it. Damn it! He decided to at least reach out and close the man's eyes.

Rydell put his hand on Pasco's shoulder.

"I know you're upset; but, please be rational. Do you honestly think he'd want you throwing your life away, thus leaving Eneas short another guard, trying to ensure he has a proper ceremony? If anything he'd want you near Eneas to help him through this. Let's get ourselves below deck."

Pasco threw Rydell's hand off of his shoulder... But sheathed his sword, and grimly followed him down to the hold.

Eneas threw down his hands in a huff. At his side, one hand was twitching nervously, though the young mage was clearly attempting to make an attempt to stay calm.

: "W-what are you saying? He will still be joining us soon, correct?"

Valerie put a sympathetic hand on Eneas's shoulder.

"I'm sorry."

: "No... T-that doesn't make sense."

Eneas stood up on a shaky legs.

: "H-he's still up there, isn't he!? And he's..."

: "I d-didn't even... How could he have...?"
