"OK! It's just through here."Valerie led the group downstairs and through the main area to a room on the starboard side of the ship. Various utensils hung from the walls, and on the counter there were a pair of knives already laid out. Val retrieved a small net of fish from an adjoining room and laid a few on the counter to start on, the backs facing to the Doogs.
"OK, watch me. These are the gills, here. You want to cut into the fish here, down to the bone, at an angle."She stood at an awkward angle so Peter could watch her as she worked.
"Then you cut into the fish here, just above the backbone, and meet your first cut. Make sure you don't hit any bones. Then you carefully cut from there down to the tail of the fish, careful not to cut any bones off into the meat. You can choke on those."Valerie turned the fish so now the stomach was facing her instead of the back.
"Now you do the same thing this way, only you also want to avoid cutting into the stomach. When you cut it correctly, you should be able to peel the meat from the fish like opening a book."The Doog demonstrated.
"You only want the meat, not the scales, so your last cut should be as close to the skin as you can make it without hitting it."Valerie had long since gotten used to cleaning fish, and with the skill of years of practice managed to cut it with barely a centimeter of space between the meat and skin.
"And that's one side done! Then you just flip it over and do it again! Here, watch carefully."Val went through the process a second time, taking it slow and doing her best to teach the child. Once she had the meat separated from the head and bones, she set it aside.
"So how did you two meet?"
