"You know, with the way you talk about a different group's use of deceit to harm your own, I would think that you'd understand why we might not have taken your scout's words at face value. But hey, whatever lets you sleep at night when you're done assaulting strangers."

"I've seen that sort of thing happen. Or at least the aftermath. A whole town, on the border between Navim and Thaus, just gone. All the buildings burnt down, everyone dead in the street or their homes, didn't matter. But just because some people are willing to do that, you can't assume everyone you don't know is. I'm not saying you and your people shouldn't be careful, but you shouldn't be waving swords in their face and threatening death on the off chance they might mean you harm."

Valerie looked at Andala, then at Cyryl and Nantale.

"Are you sure? Huh. People are weird, huh?"

"Well, good for them then."

Valerie wagged her tail happily in support.

"I suppose I do get it. But as I said. Our scouts never threatened to kill you as far as I know. And as you have seen, the king is reasonable. But because of the exact things you have seen, I can't just sit back and let strangers wander the island. I don't want to be the reason someone loses a brother or an uncle or a sister or a mother. Maybe I overstepped in having them attack when they did, but I don't regret it. And I would likely do it again, even if it means I was removed from the militia."

"Hmph. Now who's not being the perfect soldier?" Cyryl looked back at the ship. It still looked like it was in bad shape.

"I still think you could find a better way to deal with strangers than force them to disarm and drag them in front of your king. How's he even supposed to know their deal just from meeting them under those circumstances anyway? Hell, I'd bet my teeth that the main reason we did so well is just because we didn't kill your men in the process of flooring them."

"Never claimed to be the perfect soldier. Just claimed to love my country. And what bright ideas do you have then? Kindly enlighten me on the solution that we all have missed for so long."

"Well, can't say I know what'd be best for you to do every time, but in our case you coulda just had a squad of your soldiers escort our group to somewhere where we could bury our dead. Then maybe to meet with someone who could provide us supplies in trade to get us off your beach. You could have a different detachment watching the ship to make sure no more than a permitted number would be allowed to disembark. I think we might have responded to such an approach a bit more diplomatically."

Valerie wandered off a short distance - still in view of everyone else - and started sniffing around to see what strange scents there were to smell on this island.

"So either we devote enough men to watching you that we weaken our village and risk something happening that we cannot combat or we leave not enough men on you to deal with a betrayal. Even before we knew that there were more fighters on your ship, you clearly required more than just a handful of guards. Requiring around the clock supervision would have strained our village and still not prevented the potential dangers. There had been people that even went as far as throwing down their weapons to get us to trust them. So now we detain. Because waiting until someone attacks and potentially kills someone is putting our people at too much risk. Perhaps we are in the wrong. Perhaps you are right and we would be better off if we handled things differently. But there are too many scars on this island to justify doing it any other way. Family first. Country first. I think that you are the same way with the way you talk about your enemies, even if you refuse to admit it."

"That's different. We know who our enemy is and where they're from. You're operating under the assumption that everyone is a threat. And if your militia isn't up to holding a handful of skilled combatants and a sailing crew, what do you expect to do against two ships packed with hostile soldiers? Three? My advice is to either beef up your defenses, or learn how to be friendly fast."

"You seem to have missed the prince and his guards. They are not a part of the militia. Same with the royal guards and the king. But they have more important things to do than to guard strangers on our land, especially when we can instead simply subdue a smaller group and deal with them that way. Also, I believe I heard that one of your men got involved with one of our trees? We have ways of defending ourselves against large forces. That doesn't mean we want to let smaller forces get a free pass. And you are the first group that has appeared that hasn't been a threat in the end. So we work with what we know. The reason we exist in our current form is because we could not be left in peace on the mainland. We were constantly harassed. The ancient stories of the war... Lets just say that we have no experience in stories or real life of outsiders treating us well. Can you truly blame us for not believing that an armed force on our shores could be different?"

Elysia rolled her eyes at the 'too trusting' part of Nantale's dialogue. Though she caught herself a second after it was done, she could understand how that went. She couldn't understand why it stopped there though.

"Sorry for interrupting the, um, argument here but- Nantale, what did you initially think of us? This reminds me of how divisive my studies shown me about the world. We're all people: Who do we treat first other than those we trust? Cyrryl has a good point but I'm just confused on a tiny bit back there. It's like I'm seeing you're lacking something.
Also I forget, how many outsiders have you or your men personally met other than us?"

"Of course I can blame you, you attacked us! I get that you have your reasons to be suspicious of outsiders, alright? You can stop beating that dead horse. But your current policies very nearly made you some enemies today. Not that it would have mattered any time soon. Back home we don't really have the know how to sail the ocean. But if we did work it out, your island could've wound up filed under 'Avoid At All Costs' at best."

"Incidentally, I wouldn't consider calling for the royal family and their guards to be a solid backup plan."
