Tree Farming
« on: March 22, 2008, 03:44:00 pm »

I have a problem.  A very big problem.  No wood.

No Wood, no barrels.  My food stockpiles are already overflowing outrageously, so I'm wanting to start a large-scale tree farm.  My question is, what do I need in order to build one, just a large flat area that's been muddied?

Presumably the seeds/spores of underground plants are only present and carried in underwater sources. So just get the surveyor program if it still works and find somewhere with a cave river or lake and use that water to flood some floor space.

You'll get all cave plants and a lot of cave spider webs.

This is what trading is for. Ask the dwarven liaison and the human guild rep for wood, barrels, and leather (the latter because they come in bins and are cheaper than cloth). It's not as good as having a ready supply of lumber, but it's definitely manageable.

yeah, that's what I'm doing.

Also, off topic, but I forgot that bauxite is good for magma-proofing my stuff.  Hehe, half my fort is made out of it.  Now if I could just find the magma.

I've notice in my various forts with Magma, that Bauxite and magma are currently exclusive.   If you have magma, Bauxite seems oddly to be missing from the line up.   If you have Bauxite, you never seem to have magma.

Knowing me, I'm just unlucky.

You can always(provided you have the resources),make them barrels out of metal.
Metal barrels are better anyway, they are much more effective against vermin.

I have steel...  but I want to try and save it for weapons and magma-proof pumps.

Unless he has a magma forge that won't really help.

I regret to inform you that you have indeed been spun around by an electric screwdriver.

Just to make you jealous: I appear to currently have about 1k logs, and I've only cleared half the land, and it's growing up pretty fast.  Traders seem only to send me a half-dozen logs at a time.  Cedar is lighter, so they can bring a tiny bit more than other logs, but not a whole lot more.

Do muddy tiles grow trees in them? That is to say, regular trees.

Also has anyone tried making a subteranean chasm and lava species of tree?

This is incorrect. Although you need to find a cave river or lake first, ANY WATER CAN BE USED TO FARM TOWER CAPS. IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE FROM THE CAVE WATER.

regardless, the slime shooter will be completed, come hell or high water, which are both entirely plausible setbacks at this point.

If you build underground I wouldn't suggest using anything other than cave water to flood your cavern tree farms.

If you pump water from the surface downward it has a high chance of causing a permaflood up to the level of the pump. And if your pump is on the surface that means flooding the entire fortress.
