And does someone have a good suggestion as to where I should canto after theoretically visiting the house? Can't see the map here.

Crossbows have high base damage and fair accuracy, and the high base damage is really nasty if they're doing effective damage.

The downsides being that they don't factor STR for damage, and tend to be hefty.

Yeah, plus as the game goes, Xbows get less and less of damage output as their base damage caps at 30 at best but enemies continue to get their DEF, with Generals getting up to 30 so that's 0 crossbow damage against them

But with crossbow, you get a walking tank like Otiros, as you don't have to spend points on STR. I had fun with him there, and enemies not even paying attention to his presence because of the absurd defense and yet good dodge because of the speed. Justneedmorekillercrossbow.

You could hold and probably get first strike against anyone moving towards you.

I support that as it seems stupid to rush out into a horde of enemies at level 1

At Level 1, all I can recommend is defensive tactics and gratuitous use of drugs.
