Also, my character is going Sword trainee > Mercenary > Commander. We've got a lot of swordsmen.

Thing is, since there's also the monster tree, it doesn't matter so much since it's not like we'll get screwed by running into a bunch of spear users. Plus, we've already got one appplicant for every weapon type.

Don't forget ze Thief as well, though.

We don't actually have lances since the peg rider guy seems to be mia. Also an actual archer wouldn't be bad since uxie can't use ballistae

Fair point, but how often do we see ballistae? I guess it's up to FOE, and in a world with flying monsters it would make a fair deal of sense to have quite a lot.
