Socialising whilst doing certain jobs
« on: July 12, 2015, 06:35:46 pm »

I realize that social overhauls are coming and this is probably all planned, but hear me out.

Usually when, as an example, the dwarves go to fish, they all do it in roughly the same location. So you've got 7 or so dwarves sitting in the same spot doing the same thing. It's safe to say they'd probably talk amongst themselves, and probably about fishing or other things.

I think that dwarves nearby each other doing the same job should begin to form a relationship (or grudge!) with their co-workers, as well as some social skills. The same could go for workshops and smelters, engravers and miners; jobs where you usually have a lot of dwarves in the one spot doing the same job.

Or it might already be implemented/planned. In which case nevermind!

I'm pretty sure dwarves in the same place become friendly with each other automatically.  Their personalities probably have an impact as well.

I do realize this, but most places say "Make sure both dwarves are idle." and I've checked my fisherdwarves, who are constantly together, only have the "Passing Accquaintance" level of friendliness.

I successfully got my Duke to befriend a peasant, only by locking them in a room together (and accidentally crushing most of the peasant's body by dropping pots of food on her.) So I know socialising works in my fort.

I think it would have to depend on the job the two dwarves were doing.  For example, most mining tasks are quite loud, making it difficult to hold a conversation.  The named example of fishing is more reasonable.

The job skill of the two dwarves might also be a factor.  I know from (limited) experience, and (less limited) listening to people talk about it, that humans in real life that are skilled at various tasks can generally do those tasks without really thinking about it, leaving them free to focus conscious attention on a conversation.  Less skilled people need to devote their entire attention to the work, making it much more difficult to listen or reply.  That one might be a bit trickier to program, though.

Perhaps that's too much. I think that a 'relationship-building' value should be assigned to each labor, and that value dictates how long it will take for two dwarves of the same profession to become acquainted.
