Iron is magma-safe!
« on: December 06, 2007, 08:07:00 pm »

Steel isn't required for building things in contact with magma anymore! Plain old iron works fine now - my current fortress has a set of vertical iron bars submerged in the magma between the volcano and my forges. Looking at the raws, platinum should also work (it and iron have higher melting points than steel), but I haven't tried that.

Yeah, I have had a pair of Iron Bars in my Magma Channel for awhile as well.

It's also fun to learn that walls won't melt, even glass.

What to iron bars do in magma anyway? Keep out fire imps and fire men?

Fire snakes still get through though. Good thing they dont disrupt the workers.

Speaking of little known magmamaterials. If you don't mind the smokey mess you can use graphite for mechanisms and whatnot. It's the cheap and plentifull option to bauxite (order it from caravans). Sure it'll burn, but will take several seasons to finally break. Just add a fireextinguishing passage above your graphite-empowered floodgate and you can put the mechanism out every so often for servicing.

Guess various coal would also work, but haven't tried that one.

graphite is the stuff in your pencils.  Graphite is made of carbon atoms in lattice sheets on top of one another.  Carbon is found in wood, oil, coal, living organisms, and since these are quite flammable...

The above (including bbcode) neatly weighs in at 255 characters. Fallout meets DF

I can confirm platinum as being magma safe... I used platinum bars instead of iron in my current fortress.  :)

Kinda, it can melt in the real world as well as DF. Though if I'm not mistaken it will happen a couple thousand degrees later in the real world. (4800K?). The DF ignitionpoint is a hot summer day and a light breeze. Still, it remains structurally intact even if it is on fire.

Graphite doesn't melt, it sublimes.

Graphite sublimes?   That is really weird.

So...
bauxite
iron
steel
platinum
(sorta) graphite

Anything else?

Oh, and is it safe to put grates over magma?

I had bars made of ashes hold up in magma.
