Turning a water wheel into a rapid-firing catapult?
« on: July 11, 2015, 07:45:30 pm »

I was watching tutorials on how water-wheels and windmills work today. I saw how the different axles rotated. So I was thinking: Is there a way hook up an 'S' like scooping device to the end of a powered horizontal axis, and have the 'S' scoop up stones, and fire them rapidly?

On a separate note, is it possible to attach spinning blades to such axles, and spin them like a propeller? And kill the evil Nazi Goblin Wrestler's indiana Jones style?

No and no. It doesn't work like that.

Can I use the swinging wooden beams to send a kobold careening down a pit into lava?

It depends. Is the swinging wooden beam a modded weapon?

Spoiler: If Yes (click to show/hide)

Spoiler: If No (click to show/hide)

Alternatively, if 'swinging' actually means 'careening down the tracks at dangerous levels,' 'wooden' actually means 'lead,' and 'beam' is actually an alternate spelling of 'minecart...' Then yes, it's perfectly accomplish-able.

EDIT: Nevermind, kobolds are small enough that oak might just do them in. Will do science whenever I get the opportunity. Will probably use crundles or something as a kobold alternative. They're about the right size, right? (Full disclosure: I don't have a fort with trapping or useful minecart capabilities yet. But I do have a volcano and a very aesthetically pleasing fortress. And a lot of unused labor.)

This is pretty much what you get if you build a weapon trap and put in a serrated disk.  It is quite effective, although apparently can jam rather often due to the large number of severed body parts produced.

Cool! I would love to hear your how your experiments turn out! What mod specifically are you talking about?

Dwarf physics and "common sense" rarely intersect. Altho' experimenting is the way to progress, usually the wiki will tell you how things work, and what can/not be done.

Mod? No-one mentioned a mod.

Oh, my apologies. I thought since you mentioned a mod might change it, you knew of a mod specifically. Sorry for assuming.

What you ~can~ do is force them to dodge off a narrow ledge and fall.

In the combat mechanics, when a weapon (including from a weapon trap) swings at a creature, first thing they do is try to Dodge it. This may make them jump 1 tile from their current location. If they jump into open space, they fall.

If you make a line of weapon traps, and channel out the tiles to both sides, then ~if~ they dodge it's 6/8 that they'll jump and fall, and 1/8 more they'll jump back and have to try again.

And if they don't dodge... well...

(Make sure the first z-level below the traps has been "smoothed", as some creatures can climb and will grab the wall and save themselves.)

You can also use a raising bridge on a repeater to toss them randomly. Good times.

Oh, no. No mod can change it. Physics is hardcoded (Mods(except dfhack) only deal with the RAWs, .txt files that define creatures, reactions, plants, and materials.).

When I asked about a swinging wooden beam being a weapon, I meant that a wooden beam could feasibly be made a weapon, exactly the same as a sword or an axe. As in being swung by a dwarf (or Giant Desert Scorpion).
