1. The deuterium is it's fuel. It recharges it because it eventually runs out of fuel.
2. Because turning the deuterium into Tritium is a lot more fuel efficient. in a reactor.
3. Electrolysis can be used to get deuterium by breaking down any water into base elements and keeping the heavy water that's made. Doesn't need fusion to do so.

1. deuterium isn't the fuel, it is the moderator, which controls the speeds of neutrons in order to help initiate the nuclear fuel

2. fusion works best with a deuterium-deuterium reaction, short of carrying around a miniature star

3. electrolysis breaks the bonds between atoms using energy as a catalyst, to do that with water would require at least a fusion engine

to do that without fusion, you'd need to distill thousands of litres of water to extract the tiny amount of deuterium floating within.

I'll be gone for an hour. I have a car to fix.

Well, about every 3 600th water molecule is heavy water, this makes deuterium refinement inefficient except at large scale.
And if that's why it recharges, then that's gotta be a REALLY fast refinery, as it takes a factory a long time at constant production to generate enough for nukes.
So for a shuttle to do the same...

Basically, tip for the future: Deuterium is the fuel, water is the coolant.
As for it's interaction, unless the neutron acts as a pseudo-proton, I don't see it conducting heat any better than the other hydrogen atom.
Then again, if it can use the neutron as a pseudo-proton it could arguably just transfer electrons, which is what the heat is, moving electrons.

The first shell wants 2 ions, but hydrogen only has 1 proton, making it only take 1 electron. Alteration upon the neutron could maybe cause it to act as a pseudo-proton.
This would create a greater positive pull, getting the 2nd electron, though it's still a pseudo-proton, so if it becomes a neutron again, it loses an electron.
But it may not be the same electron it took, which creates a randomness that distributes the heat.
Gravity would make all hydrogen that holds onto the high intensity (hot) electron to go upwards, due to expansion making it less dense.
Just but a radiator array on top, and hook the piping to it.
So by bulls*** alien science, deuterium could be used as coolant.

Ah, ninja-ed, but I'll post anyway.

But that would generate nowhere near enough energy to power the deuterium refinery alone, let alone fully electric thrusters capable of leaving orbit.

Not to mention a neutron is in reality the combination of an electron and a proton, meaning it has neutral charge. No pseudo-protons.

In fact, what you described would consume energy, not generate it. This is just an overly complex steam engine.

Well, I might've missed the explanation in the IC thread, so I only tried thinking of a way to make deuterium coolant work.

Deuterium would make a terrible coolant, it'd more likely just revert to hydrogen and create beta particles, which would then probably explode.

It works as a nuclear moderator due to it's density, just enough to slow the beta particle triggers down in order to make nuclear reactions more efficient by increasing the chance of a fission event.

As this is basically irrelevant, unless this actually has anything to do with the gameplay, we're just not going to care about the deuterium shit.

I can, with my rather rudimentary knowledge of how a reactor works, see what you're talking about, but this is honestly just clogging up the OOC with pointless arguments which won't actually change anything about the lore of magical girls, magic or the game system.

This is the OOC, it's designed for clogging up with useless arguments so that we don't fill the IC with useless arguments. We have to do it somewhere.

Besides, it's not like we're using this thread for anything else, are we?

Although we need a new game system, amberite is still the definition of potato, and everyone is pretty damn confused on what's happening in game right now, so if you want me to bring new topics to the table, that can be arranged.

I concur on the new game system, and will invoke Rule of Cool (Amberite is an awesome name) and Artistic License for amberite. I know what it is IRL, so in this world the RL compound is likely called something else with the same properties, whereas this name was appropriated for amberite.

And to be honest, I don't know what's going on in the game either, except that Emilia is still trying to contact her dad, kj's character thinks Vira's a cosplayer and Sokka's a furry pervert weird person.

Okay, as much as I would like this farce to go on, I may as well end it.

From what I understand, Sanure's reactor isn't a single reactor. It's a fission reactor that feeds a deuterium-tritium fusion reactor. Specifically, it is a Heavy Water Reactor that uses deuterium oxide as a coolant and moderator. As it is used as a moderator, it is bombarded by neutrons which results in some of the deuterium becoming tritium. The deuterium and tritium is then extracted from the water via electrolysis and then used as fuel for a fusion reactor.

Would it work? Probably, from a hypothetical standpoint. The fusion reactor wouldn't need to be too large either if Lockheed Martin is to believed.

I don't see why they can't just remove the fission reactor and just pack in more deuterium and tritium as fuel so that they wouldn't run out in the first place, and I have no idea how the hell they deal with replacing the fission reactor's fuel rods and doing away with the waste. Or I suppose they could use a more efficient fission reactor. But hey, even with all that advanced technology and magic, they got their backsides handed to them by a poorly coordinated defense force consisting of teenagers, so such an odd design is par for course.

I am currently writing up the new system, so no need to worry about that. Amberite is the key item of the plot I plan on running sometime into the future, and everyone should be roleplaying right now. So new topics that pertain to the game might be necessary.

ELF! EMP IS NOW MY HERO WHO UNDERSTANDS MY SYSTEM!!!!! For the record, That is the science part of it. I still have Artistic License on the system on Sepia's systems, but that is the gist of it.

@Emp, It's because Sepai (the shuttle) is smaller than a normal Layar ship, they couldn't fit the necessary giant fuel cells into the shuttle. The waste is recycled as long as possible until it becomes a non-harmful by-product.

I don't care it shares a name with a real world compound, but I do care that it's absolutely fucking stupid.

I mean, just read over that section of the IC.
* smurf cries at the memory

But yeah, the game is feeling really rushed at this point. I mean, some sort of briefing or even the slightest of reasons not to immediately return home would be nice, but no, all I got was an AI having a hissy fit and a "Welcome to Wyoming".

Okay, as much as I would like this farce to go on, I may as well end it.

This is what I was implying the reactor was, although I assumed they gathered deuterium by skimming the fusion reaction with water, creating deuterium and some random isotope of oxygen, both stable isotopes. Saves having to run another fission reactor on the side, removing the uranium fuel from the equation.

ELF! EMP IS NOW MY HERO WHO UNDERSTANDS MY SYSTEM!!!!!

mate, we both know this isn't your system

even with this explanation, Sepia's actions still make no sense

Yeah. We still need a good reason to stay. I mean, for one, Emilia's father is likely going to assume whoever she's with kidnapped her and calling the Northsdale Five on them if possible, John lives on Venus and has no business on Earth, Vira's a wanderer, Aisly and Lillian both have other lives outside of this or their own things....
