Let's Play National LCS: Part II: Episode I: The Beginning
« on: July 02, 2015, 08:13:20 pm »

WARNING: The scope of this game is narrower than that of real life. We have attempted to include foul language, graphic violence, politics, religion, sexual references, adult situations, narcotics, prostitution, bodily functions and bad pickup lines, but Bay 12 Games recognizes that there might be omissions which will make some players uncomfortable. In light of these facts, use your discretion when making decisions about reading this Let's Play.

Liberal Crime Squad, for the uninitiated, is a game based on 1983 roguelike Oubliette, developed by Tarn Adams until 2004, and which later continued development under the Bay12 community. It is, in essence, a parody of politics in the form of a game. You play as an Elite Liberal terrorist cell leader revolutionary on a mission to stop Arch-Conservative influences on the United States. You must do this in the most end-justifies-the-means manner possible by committing a range of crimes, from treason, to murder, to kidnapping, to disturbing the peace, all in the name of the Liberal Cause.

To put it simply:
The LCS advocates total gun control, and will shoot anyone who disagrees.

You win when all the laws and most of the politicians of the country are Elite Liberal and lose when either your founder dies and there's nobody to take up the reins or in the rare instance that the Conservatives manage to pass an Arch-Conservative Amendment and rewrite the Constitution.

The particular flavor of LCS this Let's Play will be using is Elite Developer Johnathan S. Fox's mod, National LCS, which modifies the main game by allowing the Liberal Crime Squad to travel to multiple cities in the country ─ Seattle, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington, D.C. ─ which makes for more varied gameplay. It also makes changes such as having special game-win text and by making most of the regular blue text in the game cyan, which is easier on the eyes on a black background, and adding ASCII cutscenes for some game events, such as a news channel hiring a new anchor.

We need a slogan!

Simmons Apartments, Seattle, Washington
Liberalism is all but forgotten. Over a third of Congress is taken up by CEOs. The death sentence awaits anybody convicted of any crime. There is no weekend, and child labor has been reinstated for the first time since the Gilded Age. Anybody who voices their own opinion is arrested. Machine guns can be bought at the department store. There are conservative majorities in all branches of government, and President Roger Skirrow, former CEO of the Scardino Corporation, has brought about a dark age of the country. His arch-conservative political agenda is topped with writing in a constitutional amendment to rewrite the constitution as he sees fit, and if nobody does anything to stop it, then the country as we know it may end...

Spoiler: Stats (click to show/hide)

Terry Tenpenny is an androgynous college student living in Seattle, Washington. Terry leans further to the left than somebody who just lost their left leg, and Terry is greatly disturbed by the movement the country is taking. Terry is determined to stop it.

Late one night, presumably after a binge on pirated Michael Moore films, Terry finally goes over the edge. Terry decides that they're going to demolish Roger Skirrow's government and everything it stands for. Terry decides that "Terry" isn't good enough of a name for the one who's going to save the country. Terry takes a new name... one to stand for freedom.

Having also binged on anime last night, Terry decides on Hidari, which Google Translate tells them means "left" in Japanese. Entirely different from "left-wing" or "liberal", but left all the same.

Hidari then heads out to the Harmonious Plan Juice Bar to meet fellow Elite Liberals. Hidari befriends 5 hippies and a retiree at the Juice Bar and recruits them to the cause. As Hidari needs to pay the rent, xe sends some of the more computer-oriented hippies to a warehouse in the industrial district of town to steal peoples' credit card numbers. Illegal, but it pays off. The end justifies the means!

Subsequently, Hidari ventures with the retiree, who looks very promising, to Simmons Pawn and Gun. Pawn shops are handy, because they always have spray paint, knives, shotguns, and crowbars, plus you can sell stuff there. Hidari only needs one thing, though: spray paint.

In LCS, spray paint is your best friend. You can raise awareness, get Juice (sort of like experience points), and shut down sites with spray paint. Spray paint is a great way to get through the early part of the game, and throughout the game it remains a nonviolent way to raise awareness at sites that don't have other things you can use to raise awareness, like factory machinery or science lab cages.

While at the pawn shop, Hidari sees the illogical Conservative thought that submachine guns ─ guns whose entire purpose are to mow down crowds of people ─ can be sold to civilians. But that's not why xe's here. Hidari is here for paint.

Hidari goes to the Firemen HQ, a place of Conservative suppression of free thought and speech. The Firemen, straight out of Fahrenheit 451, have the duty of suppressing any and all free speech. Because of this, our first target law to Liberalize is free speech, because until it's at least a mere Conservative rather than Arch-Conservative, anybody who tries to write our own newspaper will get arrested and the place they're at gets burned down. Bad stuff.

Over the next few days, Hidari goes to various places and vandalizes them vigorously to spread their message. Xe thoroughly graffitis the hallways of the Firemen HQ to spread xyr message about free speech. Hidari, in the process, rises from being a mere Activist to becoming a Socialist Threat. Hidari grows in strength!

Spoiler: Stats (click to show/hide)

Hidari, now able to recruit another person, decides to find somebody useful. In case anybody gets arrested, Hidari needs to be able to keep xyr crew out of jail, so Hidari goes out and finds a lawyer. Upon arriving at the Courthouse, Hidari finds that the courthouse is no longer a mere courthouse; now, it is known as the Halls of Supreme Judgement, where every ringing out of a gavel decides whether somebody lives or dies. Eventually, Hidari finds a man known as Nicky Bendix, and successfully gets him to join the crew.

Hidari spends the next few days hacking while hiding out in a warehouse, trying to raise money to buy a printing press. It's not exactly the best idea with free speech laws as-is, but having a newspaper is incredibly important. During this period, the nation's attention is brought to racial inequality when a black man is beaten by a police officer, which is caught on camera.

Hidari's 1337 h4xx0r1ng 5k1775 make them a revolutionary! The skill gained from h4xx0r1ng should help their cr34t1v3 p0w3r5 when the newspaper starts printing.

Spoiler: Stats (click to show/hide)

Hidari buys the printing press and quickly begins publishing the dark secrets of corporations and the Conservative Media. Public opinion quickly begins swaying.

And then the firemen showed up.

"Come out! We've got you surrounded! Unacceptable speech has occured at this location! Do not fight and you will not be harmed!"

Terry knows that xyr only recourse is to submit to the Firemen and be tried under the unreasonably strict legal system. An Ace Liberal Attorney can probably get xyr off the hook, right?

Luckily, nobody else is arrested.
There is a very bad problem with our dear Ace Attorney's failure to fight the Conservative injustices.

Prison regulation is at an all-time low. Terry will be REEDUCATED (DUN DUN DUN) at the Forced Labor camp. If Terry's Juice or Heart drops low enough, Terry will become Conservative! (DUN DUN DUN)

Our only counterattack, therefore, is to break Terry out of maximum-security prison. 12 years in prison means Terry will be held on the first floor, which means that somebody with sufficient disguise skill should be able to run in, escort out the Glorious Leader, and get out.

But not losing our leader is way more important, and we can always extort some random sucker landlord out of a classy apartment downtown where the cops will never find us. We can't always just get a new leader, since we would need somebody with upward of 100 juice to take over, and the only person who fits that bill right now is our dear old 1337 h4xx0r 82-year-old grandma, Vicky Walton. (Note to self: Use "Urban Commando Grandma" as YouTube handle.)

Speaking of which, Vicky has gigantic Charisma and Intelligence, which means she's our prime target to break Terry out of jail.

Vicky takes classes at the Elite Liberal Community College for about two months to become a professional spy, trained in locksmithing (and, thereby, reverse engineering dictates lockpicking) and theatre (i.e. disguise.) In the meantime, the Conservative agenda loosens due to the brave actions of the Elite Liberal Crime Squad and the controversy surrounding the FS-7 case in which Terry was sentenced to jail primarily for spraypainting on walls and voicing xyr own opinion.

During the time that Vicky spends training, Terry remains strong.

Nectar Valley Forced Labor Camp

Late at night, a black Volkswagen Beetle drives up to Nectar Valley Forced Labor Camp on the outskirts of Seattle. An old woman in a Prison Educator's lab coat uniform steps out and calmly strolls into the prison, making sure her .38 revolver is visible to indicate that she means serious business.

She quickly finds the controls and frees her friend and companion Terry Tenpenny--perhaps better known as Hidari, Liberal Revolutionary, from Conservative clutches. Though now wanted for escaping prison, Hidari is quite happy to be freed from the terrible clutches of xyr oppressors. Another fellow, one Alejandro VanLynden, is a tender 14, but bonded with Hidari in prison and wants out with the duo. Commando Vicky agrees, but only if he comes quietly. The group rushes to the labor camp's entry, lying through their teeth whenever the Conservative oppressors confront them. They escape unnoticed into the night.

Vicky, Hidari, and Alejandro quickly move their operations to Turner Apartments downtown, where they purchase an apartment completely legally with completely illegally-gotten money. They plan their next move, their leader free from Conservative clutches and a prison-breaking grandmother in their ranks...

The squad gets into a rhythm. Vicky, who is by this point the coolest granny ever, regularly goes out and does various Liberal things, like smashing Conservative machinery, painting Liberal graffiti, and tampering with juries. She raids a sweatshop so utterly and completely that it has to close down, once released all the bunnies at a cosmetics facility, and traveled to New York to hijack some Fox News show and spread her Liberal agenda all over the country.

A Printing Press is also bought and hidden in Los Angeles. Since documents can be published without anybody actually manning the Press, this press is safe from Conservative eyes. Documents describing the horrors of the Conservatives are published monthly.

The CONSERVATIVE CRIME SQUAD burst onto the scene one day. They are worthless M16-toting hicks who try to subvert all that is righteous and Liberal. They are an obvious threat to the LCS and are, basically, the villains of the game.

We could try to take them down by kidnapping their grunts and beating the shit out of them to find their warehouses.

But you know what? Nah. That's hard. It's a lot easier to go to a certain place and do a certain thing, which will be covered extensively later.

Richardson Staffing, New York City

Vicky witnesses a terrifying sight. The Conservatives publicly endorse !!DANGEROUS NUCLEAR ENERGY!!, a threat to her way of life! "Not scared of nukes, eh, kids?" she says to herself. "I'll scare you away from nukes, I will", she quietly mumbles as she strolls off to her Beetle.

Nuclear Power Plant, NYC

A Volkswagen Beetle pulls up to the Nuclear Power Plant on the very edges of Long Island. An old woman clad in a lab coat strolls out and calmly walks past security. She quickly finds her way to the control room of the facility.

Inside, there is a big red button.

She presses it.

The reactor overheats, and she hears some incredibly loud explosions.

A high-speed car chase with the police ensues, as she manages to skid around corners, causing the police cars to crash into walls and violently explode.

She then finally returns to her hideout and resumes her knitting, the public now dead scared of nuclear power.

Vicky is the best little old lady. I don't care that she's not the leader of the LCS. She is the leader of the LCS at heart.

Mini update:

Been a while since I've played, but the rundown:

The Conservative Crime squad is irritating, but as long as they can't find your base, a hacker team and a newspaper can pretty easily counteract them. To permanently erase them from existence, though, Vicky went down to the NSA headquarters Ministry of Love, hacked into their computers, and then published a list of CCS backers. The FBI picked up on this immediately and quickly set out to taking out the CCS. Public opposition to them is at an all-time high. The other stuff Vicky stole from the NSA headquarters Ministry of Love was published the following month.

A raid on the CEO's castle--yeah, they're just that rich--quickly earned the squad some documents demonstrating a CEO evading taxes for several years straight, along with some steamy love letters he wrote to himself. They were quickly published, as well. Damn, I love the Liberal Guardian.

Vicky has continued taking stands against conservatism. Possibly in reference to America's deeply ingrained gun obsession, it's incredibly hard to raise gun control laws in LCS, so to demonstrate how bad guns are, Vicky raided a military armory for a machine gun, then took it down to the police station and gunned down several officers with it. She repeated this several times a week.

Anti-pollution sentiment is kind of lax. To counter this, I sent Vicky down to the resident oil refinery, where she smashed all the machinery, stole everything they had, and liberally applied spray paint. This quickly caused public attention to the issue to skyrocket.

The cops eventually caught up to Hidari and co. Again. Alejandro was, unfortunately, killed, but Hidari's incredible rap sheet was at stake. Fortunately, Hidari survived and quickly relocated to another place.

A couple days later, the FBI finished off the CCS. There is NO OPPOSITION NOW! MUA HA HA HA HA! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA!

Almost forgot, new Liberal Status; the amendment that forces a reelection came into being a few days after the FBI finished their raids. Election was massive success.
