And it was a lot more common to be a spear and shield person lacking actual armor then it was to have armor and no shield. Simple shields and spears were a lot cheaper then armor for a lot of history, as well as being easier to make, so they made up a very common militia/levée infantry equipment set.
Yup. Just take a look at the traditional Zulu warrior gear. Spear, Shield and lioncloth.

Day 1, Part 3
You spend a short time to summon forth another pair of skeletons, and spread the equipment out among your six loyal guardians forming the most mismatched group of skeleton warriors this world has ever seen! With the simple matters taken care of you turn to using the strange second source of power to make yourself stronger, and much to your surprise as soon as you go to use it the power begins to drain away as some new information begins to become apparent to you.

Information Unlocked! Minion Level Up!

After your minions attain enough kills (which varies based on their power level) they can level up leading to more health, and changing into an advanced form of their basic shell. (This is a freebie) For example after a few kills are attained a Skeleton can Level Up into a Captain Bones.

Day 2
The rest of the day passes in relative peace, and as dawn begins on the second day of your existence you find it is strangely quiet like the calm before a storm.

It would be better if we don't make the captain fight, so that his bonus lasts the whole encounter.
