I think we should try and extend the actual mausoleum entrance level a bit, whatever we do, and get some sniper nests in or something.

Actually, that is a good question, Could we design our-self to Expand sideways, but be Tilted at a heavy enough angle to still be going downward?

Expand downwards. It's harder to skip levels when heroes can't just scale outer walls up.
