No immigrants?
« on: June 30, 2015, 04:36:51 am »

Hi, so I'm playing Dwarf Fortress again for the first time in about two years and, I don't know if it has to do with updates or if I'm just being stupid, but for some reason, a year and a half have now past, but I haven't received any Migrants yet.

I also started at the year 5, which I believe might be the problem...

Basically, is there a way to attract migrants faster or am I stuck till the world population increases?

If you're not getting any at all, that might mean that your civilization is completely dead.

If you want to attract more, sell stuff to caravans to increase your exported wealth.

It could also mean you built in a location inaccessible to any dwarven civ - separated by water, or (so I've read) deep in a mountain range.

Before Embark, it's important to look at the "neighboring civs" screen - you want (at least) 2 Dwarven civs to help ensure you'll have a viable source of immigrants.

If you received no migrants at all, your population caps are messed up. They no longer apply "after the liaison leaves"; they now work immediately and accurately. If you set them to 7 you will never receive any immigrants.

On a similar note, there were problems early in the v0.40 branch with mods removing one of the population cap values, which then defaulted to 0, blocking all migration. It's my understanding that the current version uses a more reasonable default.

If your population caps are set correctly you should at least receive the two "hard-coded" migrant waves, even if your civilization is extinct.

Only the strict population cap ignores the liaison. The standard one still requires they show up and meet with your mayor.

Its a feature. Impregnating booze is a planned tech tree for dwarves and this is a sneak peek at it.
Unless you're past reproductive age. Then you're pretty much an extension of your kids' genitalia

Well, my exported wealth consists of exporting Iron and gems.
The Dwarven folk are not dead and I have at least 2 Dwarven Civilisations near me.
I did not make changes/modded to any caps.
I am using an older version though, so I guess I'll download it again and try a new fortress.

I'd turn off all notifications* and let it run for a year while you're cooking/eating dinner or something, see if any ~will~ show up any time in the future.

But, yeah, might be time for a reboot. :P

I have a world where the last dwarf died ~5000 years ago and I STILL get migrants, so the game will still make them up if need be.
