So I think there should be some mineral/item/substance that emits a gas that is poisonous to creatures. (Especially gobins.) I have a chamber that seals itself on invaders and I need to gas my enemies.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM!

As per standing tradition, you've suggested something thats been suggested before, and discussed. Overall, the community would be keen on gasses inside DF.

ToadyOne and ThreeToe hasnt expressed being against it, but there is no time line.

If it was full tradition, it would be a wall of text with a pile of suggestions, all of which have been discussed and posted before.  Also, a senior member would post each time this suggestion has been mentioned.

Oh, and for it to be properly traditional, NW_Kohaku hasn't posted with a detailed and source specific explantation of the issues invovled. Guy(?)'s a hero, I reckon he does so much admin like this he copy-pastes his explanations from one identical suggestion to the next to keep up.

I don't think I've ever actually seen a post like that on the Bay 12 forums. The learning cliff keeps such people at a distance.

I have, unfortunately, seen such posts elsewhere.

Actually, Footkerchief is/was much better known for that sort of thing than I am, and I only started copy-pasting links because he did it.  (It has the nice feature of making it so that if you search for a term, you can find a ready-made response and pile of links to previous threads, plus a response you could copy-paste easily...)

Footkerchief seems to have given up on the Suggestions Forum entirely, and moved completely to Mantis a couple years ago, however.

And Footkerchief most certainly was copy-pasting.  Personally, I tend to make changes to see if I can tweak the message to make it less likely to get someone taking it as a personal attack that demands personal retribution, and never really settled on anything.

Anyway, why not, just for the giggles:

It's entirely possible to mod in toxic gas items yourself, so don't despair! Deon once had toxic gas pockets inside of coal veins, for example.

If you've had a forgotten beast with deadly dust, extract or blood and it got on some rocks, you could dump those rocks in a magma pit and have the frozen FB stuff spray up in a deadly cloud/

Technically, yes. Not in the way you are probably thinking, though.

You can melt down gold into gold sludge, but you can't make a pool of molten gold to dump DAMN FILTHY ELVES or disobedient dwarves in.

And Iktomi, don't let the fact that its been suggested, for the last 7 years, get to ya. Its super fuckin hard to suggest something for this game, that hasn't already been suggested and cover to some fantastic depth.

I hope you werent scarred off, and will stick around, and join in with the community.

The fact that it has been suggested before is certainly not a reason to avoid continuing the discussion of a suggestion.  It's simply saying that one shouldn't repeat the discussion of a suggestion.

Or, in simple terms,
Bad: "Hey guys, I thought of X! It might be fun!" "So did a few dozen people before you."

Good: "I think X is a good idea because list of reasons that acknowledge and address any problems the previous discussions had and goes into greater detail than previous discussions, or presents a more unified and cohesive argument than what was assembled along a long and rambling thread before."

Not much.  It forms a pool on the floor which can make it painful to walk through that tile, but that's about it.

You can booby-trap mining or treecutting by using a material that boils away at room temperature.  They will remain stable and solid-seeming until mined/cut.  (I'd suggest a boiling point 9910 degrees Urist... cold enough to evaporate in any weather, but warm enough not to cause frostbite in the initial blast.)  Gas attacks in mining tunnels are usually effective, but there's a good chance that the cloud from an outdoor tree will dissipate before causing a syndrome.

Yeah I remember a few effects like this in masterwork too. Forges would emit smoke which irritated dwarve's lungs, coal dust could cause them to have respiratory issues, etc
