"Like I said, I'm no good at checkers, but you could take a break from pushing and just tell me where to push them."

"Diagonals are your best friend, then--and I'll be speaking as if the directions are in diagonals from here. When 'attacking' another piece--there must be an empty square after the opposing piece. All pieces only move forward and never backwards, unless you have a crown, or termed as 'being King'd' which happens when you reach the other far end of the board. This...is where I think house rules pop up: In some games, the King piece (of which many can exist) is able to move backwards at the same speed. In other games, the King piece can move as far as possible, backwards and forwards, thus creating a -very- potent unit.

"There are also rules that go 'must "eat" first', which means that if the opportunity of attack presents itself, the player has no choice but to attack--even if it means working in the opponents' favor, usually due to a sacrifice. In some games, that rule isn't used. That's...admittedly my mistake here. Not knowing the rules of this game. So I'm assuming many things.

"Also before anyone asks, No, I can't take these pieces as souvenirs because they're 'stuck' to the board. The ebony-wood smell can work though, if you're into that."

Interestingly, you do in fact manage to move the non-king statue backwards to make the knight's attack a carpin' axe rampage.

Tea perks up at Tiruin's move.

"Russian rules? That's...alright, but...why would it have made that previous move with a safe-ish move available?"

"I said I'm bad at checkers, not that I don't know the rules." Twin walks over to wherever Tiruin is, ready to push whichever pieces are indicated to her.

"There don't seem to be many enemy pieces left though, so this appears to be almost done."

Tiruin was, in concise ideas,  :-[

"A-ah, sorry. I usually try to cover everything when someone's missing out on info so that we're all kept up to date. I didn't mean to imply otherwise though! Though I did not know Russian rules here."

She looks at the board.

"It is the next to final move. I suggest we don't 'kill' it. Anyone want to try diplomacy?"

Tiruin pokes the beastie opposite those two knights with her stick. Nicely.

"I once watched an anime where the protagonist won a magic game of chess by seducing the enemy queen. The attempt at diplomacy made me think of that."

Your stick makes a tiny noise against the hollow wood, but nothing seems to happen. The ebony serpent looks to have a smug smile, but that might have been there before.

"I have a really, really bad feeling about this."

(Remember to give prompts for Tir's danger sense if danger is imminent)

"Let's just gather people and finish this. Then we can get you all out of here and move on."

Aoshi pours rest of the liquid onto the cutting edge.
It sinks into the blade, and you can visibly see that the edge is thinner.

"Maybe it wants us to lose? Or I'm overthinking all this by giving a 'win' or 'lose'. Though this is me trying to interpret a stone serpent. Personification, ahoy."

((The lack of battle descriptions didn't help :-\ Was the smug look always there--as in the 'lips' carved into that 'expression', or was that my recent assumption based on something that was already there?

Words. :P ))

Wonder if I can break the serpent with a bladed weapon.

((The battle descriptions weren't there because I was so very tired at the moment. They're mostly just flavour text, and not a significant clue as to how this room works.))

Considering it seems to be just plain wood, and hollow at that, probably. You won't know for sure without trying, though.

"Icy, details on Russian rules please. First time I've heard of that."

Try to bring the serpent that moved, back to where it came from.

"Oh, it works..." Aoshi deposits the now empty bottle on next to the door and observes what's happening below in chess room. He tests sharpness of the blade by slashing the plastic bottle.

"Thanks." He says to Adragis.

Tea seems thoughtful at Tiruin's request.

"Well, I know you have to capture whenever possible...the pawns or non-kings or whatever can move backwards while capturing, aaaand...kings can move as many squares they want in a direction, including after a capture, which can just chain from there. I've played the ruleset a few times with my brother...oh, and in...oh carping carp."

He quiets down, slowly sits down on the rock floor, hanging his head.

"...In Soviet Russia, the winner...is the loser."
