So, my idea is to spin the truth so that we see the lord himself. . . . If someone would like to formulate this layout into words, it would be nice.
tell him our family name, and then our position, or lack thereof,  in rapid succession. After that we tell him, in a way that forces him to acknowledge and accept, or turn us away, that we are charged to give the letter in which we hold directly to the lord of the castle.
we need not mention our purpose of squireing. . . Infact, I recommend against it, for now.
+1 Introduce ourselves and tell them we have a letter from Sir Gregor to Lord Varzog. I might think of actual dialogue later if needed.

Give the recommendation letter to the guard. Ask the guard how long it will take to get a response or audience with Lord Varzog.
If it is an extremely obscene amount of time, like a day, then we should find an inn for the night or sleep in the horse stables if it is too expensive.

This, but. . . . a few edits. . . . Before handing over the letter, ask if there were any uncostly places to stay at.
After that, hand him the letter, and ask him how busy the lord usually is, and, then how long it would take to get a response.
From there, if it is more than a day, then, we should be productive and visit the smaller houses. Starting with House Darrengoth, and then house Pimel. If he declines, it helps to have other options of places to go.

I see two links. Will read but can it be shown?

EDIT: Just read.

We should go immediately.

"I shall go immediately with you to Lord Varzog."

While on the way.

"May I have your name? It feels odd being in the company of one who knows my name but I not theirs."

Actually, I am, personally,  more interested in the contents of such a letter. We should ask him about it.
