Grooming a mayor?`
« on: June 19, 2015, 04:37:55 am »

So, my young fort has several dwarfs with no "item" preferences - nothing that can be produced, only materials, foods, animals, colors and/or shapes. So - as I understand it - no mandates if elected Mayor.

Is it feasible to leave them idle in order to skill up their social skills as much as possible, and aim for them being elected Mayor when the fortress hits population 50? Or are they doomed to be passed in social skills (and hence lose the election) by children (or vamps) no matter what I do?

All are peasant types with no skills critical to the effort (if any at all), and currently there are no children, so they have no competition while idling (for the time being).

(I know I'd want to dive in to their Personality Traits to ensure an optimal candidate, but before I bother I wanted to know it was even possibly worth the trouble to try.)

Not answering the question, but I immediately let the elected mayor select a replacement, i.e. a dorf with no preferences.

Here's the thing.

I can't answer your question, nor do I know anyone who can.  I'm sure someone can, but I don't KNOW that they can.

However, I can say this.

Use one of them for your baron/ess.

Well, the issue that springs to mind is that they'll be overtaken in skills and friends while performing mayoral duties (e.g., shoulder to cry on / be yelled at.) I'd groom two dwarves so that they can take turns in office.

It's possible that maybe other dwarves could catch up to them with the time spent in office. From my experience, though, my forts seem to naturally swap between just a couple of mayors on their own.

Reading his name would trigger it. Thinking of him would trigger it. No other circumstances would trigger it- it was strictly related to the concept of Bill Clinton entering the conscious mind.

Letting your chosen dwarves idle (if you groom a mayor and baron(ess) at the same time, you can guarantee they have a good conversation partner, and possibly set them up as spouses, as well...) will VEEEEERRRRRYYYYY SLLLLLOOOOOWWWWLY result in good conversation skills.  (I understand it now takes something like 40 years of constant idle to hit legendary...) Vampires will blow through that if they are sufficiently old, but you can always just "burn the witch" to solve that problem if you aren't looking to exploit that, anyway.  In general, I prefer to get my mayor from my starting seven, and start them out with some ranks in consoler and conversationalist to kickstart their socialization careers.

As for children, the easy way to handle that is to just use special children-only burrows.  Personally, I set up a table and chair in their bedroom (or give them a small private dining room if you want), and make a burrow that only includes their room(s), the food stockpile, and the farms, where I have "all dwarves harvest" set.  This will result in children that stay locked in their room any time they aren't harvesting crops, and they won't gain much in terms of social skills.

Personally, I like [DF] because after climbing the damned learning cliff, I'm too elitist to consider not liking it.
