DF has crashed a fair bit as long as I've played it (since 0.40.9 or something like that). Even when crashing while saving, it has yet to thrash my save, either successfully saving, or retaining the previous one. My recommendation is to save regularly, though.

this is completely new to me. the previous version i had was stable. i think during my six month tenure with it. it crashed like once. maybe

this one. so far my current save is at 10 crashes and i have only played it for like 2 hours or so.i think there might be something at the caverns that causes the crashing...

You stated that you're using the "starter pack" - does it include DFHack? If so, what plugins/scripts are enabled by default? If you remove all such customizations, do the crashes go away?

P.S. If you don't get this note, let me know and I'll write you another.
It's amazing how dwarves can make a stack of bones completely waterproof and magmaproof.
It's amazing how they can make an entire floodgate out of the bones of 2 cats.

I've had one crash in the last few hours with all "active" DFHack contents deactivated (I assume key bindings to stuff that's player activated doesn't count, so I've deselected all DFHack entries in the PyLNP GUI. I don't think I've used any player activated functions since deactivation). The crash was a save cleanup one. It MIGHT be a reduction of the crash frequency.

Do you have the multilayer view mode on? Forget the name of it, its part of some tilesets. Thats caused me a few crashes.

Also the new trees have some crashes where they try and geow through your constructions, and things designated for building.

Its a bit annoying, but much worse is the later game fps death.

Multilevel is a part of "TWBT", the command "multilevel 0" in the dfhack window should turn it off for the current session, or you can comment it out in the "extra_dfhack_init.init" file in the game's (not the pack's) root directory to disable it unless you specifically activate it for a session.

Well, without any active DFHack operations, I have still gotten a fair number of crashes, although all of them during saving (1 while saving, two while cleaning up afterwards). No crashes yet during game play, though.

If you're using large embarks, large worlds, or long history, you might be running out of memory. (DF on Windows can only use 2gb, unless you patch it to be large address aware). I've noticed that with the 40.xx versions, it's a lot easier to hit that 2gb cap than on previous versions, and if you're running close to the limit, crashing on save can be a symptom.

No, it's not memory. A standard 3*3 embark on a pocket world with a 30 year history...

Yeah, in that case you shouldn't be running into memory issues.
