Glazebeard: Long live the Queen!

It is the dawn of a new world. New civilizations begin to take hold, beginning seeds that will one day become the mightiest roots. Each strives for the strongest hold, the mightiest fortress, so that all will know who owns this world. 8 dwarven civilizations striving for control, to leave the mightiest legacy in a world yet to be tamed. There are sparse metals and a lot of dangerous wildlife and megabeasts, so they're going to have a tough run of it.

This is the story of Glazebeard, who strikes the earth in the name of The Escorted Gate.

The chill from the mountainhomes still clings to this land, the river we were promised has frozen solid. There is an abundance of wood and clay, and we are told metals lie deep within the earth. For the glory of The Escorted Gate, we strike the earth here, come what may.

Nidilap likes Adamantine, Bituminous Coal, Garnets, Cats for their aloofness, Dwarves for their stupidity, and Swords for their Spikes and edges. When possible, he prefers to eat pizza, ramen noodles, and sushi. He absolutely detests elves and spiders. He needs MTN DEW to get through the working day.

A medium- sized creature prone to great ambition, but only when he feels like it.

This is intended to be a community fortress, not a succession fortress. You can pick a dwarf, though.

15 Granite, 5
We’re digging into the clay hill to establish our farms, tunneling deeper to reach the stone below. I’ve ordered the land stripped of as many trees as we can manage and whatever grows here to be picked.
The miners are reporting pecan tree roots burrowing through the clay into the tunnels. They clear through them with their picks easily enough, but I have concerns about the security...
I’ve ordered a carpenters workshop built to begin making use of the abundance of wood. There’s little sense in waiting until we have appropriate indoor facilities to begin work.

27 Granite, 5
Beds, Barrels, and Bins! We must have storage! Many of the farm plots have been cleared, proper tunneling should begin shortly!

1 Slate, 5
We’ve struck chert and kaolinite. Planning for workshops and living quarters can now begin. We’ve dug a seed storage room next to the farms for easier access. I don't want anyone eating seeds before we plant them. We're in here for the long haul.

Yellow Jasper has been found in the spiral shaft. We weren’t anticipating gems before metals, but we’ll work with what we have.

16 Slate, 5
I’ve designated a Trade Depot be built in a small alcove away from the main entrance. We’ll construct an inner passage and storage area for goods once we clear out the workshop floor.

21 Slate, 5
The workshop areas have been designated, however the miners are unable to keep up with demand, as the stone is proving much more formidable than clay. As we wait I’m going to train the dogs we brought for hunting and see if I can’t make use of what little wildlife there is.

9 Felsite, 5
Tobul has created a masterpiece almond wood bin. This has me thinking...

13 Felsite, 5
A masterpiece cherry wood barrel. Hmm...
I need a drink. Fortunately an area has just opened up on the workshop floor to brew. I may as well, everyone else is busy.

23 Felsite, 5
Another masterpiece, this time a persimmon wood barrel. I wish he’d make some masterpiece beds, though we have one for each bedroom now. I’m moving the carpentry workshop indoors, no sense in working in the hot sun.

3 Hematite, 5
We’ve struck mica and designated the gathering hall as well as food production and storage. The cool underground provides welcome relief from the summer heat. I hope none of our food on the surface has spoiled, though the farm plots seem to be giving a good yield.
And sure enough, a masterpiece gingko wood bed. Tobul’s really got a knack for carpentry.



"Torbul."

The dwarf looked up from the chert surface of his worktable to see the expedition leader silhouetted in the doorway.

"Èrith. what brings ye here?” His turquoise eyes turned back to his work, a swiftly forming persimmon bedframe.

“I want to discuss your work.”

Torbul’s hammer stopped mid-swing. “What about it? You snatched up those beds pretty fast, are you telling me they weren’t good enough?”

“No, no! Just the opposite. I want.. more.”

The two dwarves shared a long look. “More?”

“Yes, more! As in, tables, chairs, training spears. Just.. more.”

“Do ye think I don’t want that?”

“Well, it feels... Elvish.”

Torbul shrieked with laughter, his high voice echoing through the small chamber. Èrith recoiled at the sound.

“Don’t worry about being Elvish, Èrith.  The Elves won’t touch anything I make. You see,” he chuckled, raising a finely honed chisel, “we cut at the wood as we do stone. We take a raw, unrefined piece of timber and shear it away piece by piece, revealing a beautiful work underneath. Elves have no sense for this. They grow their bloody wood into the shapes they want. They ‘ave no respect for dwarven craftsmanship.”

He turned back to the table, his attention back on the persimmon.

“You just send me the orders, and I’ll make pieces the mountainhomes will gasp at. You just do your job and make sure the numbers add up.”

Èrith turned to go. He needed a drink. A long drink.

16th Hematite, 5
Many plants on the surface are producing fruit. We’ll use this opportunity to stockpile for the winter. I’ll have to handle it myself as the entire fortress is occupied with work of some form or another. We desperately need more bodies here.

6 Malachite, 5
It appears as though we shall get those new bodies, as a party of dwarves marched out from the forest, where they were welcomed as kin of The Escorted Gate. I will do my best to accommodate their various professions, but for now there is a lot of hauling to be done.

A Giant Coati has stolen a pig tail fiber cloth! It just.. made of with it.  Clearly the storerooms aren’t filling up fast enough, but there always seems to be more hauling to be done and not enough dwarves to do it all.
Tobul’s been turning out masterpiece after masterpiece, so he’s been making the furniture for our meeting hall.

1 Limestone, 5
Autumn has come with little fanfare. Progress continues on storage and furniture placement, and we have reached a level of quartzite in the main shaft. Still no sign of metal ores. I was told that we could expect a dwarven caravan this season, yet we have little to trade.

15th Limestone
The Baron consort and a caravan from Ninurinod have arrived. I’d best get to the Trade Depot.
I met with Kunil Nanirmeng, the official Mountainhomes liason. We’re not the only group founding new settlements for The Escorted Gate. He asked what we wanted, and I replied with “All the metal you can carry, especially steel. Bring an anvil and some picks to, metals are scarce here.”

Zaneg has created a masterpiece shist flute! Perhaps ow we can get some decent supplies! I managed to trade the few instruments and pieces of furniture we had for a steel bar. It’s not much, but it’s a start.

The miners have found a cave network deep underground. I’ve ordered a halt on the shaft. Hopefully nothing will come up from the depths while we figure out how to proceed.

No metals, all wood, and now a cave lies between us and the riches of the earth. No armour, limited resources for leather. There are other settlements cropping up, and only so many resources to send to each one. I saw pity in Kunil's eyes at our meager trade goods. The mountainhomes may not come again if we do not have a good showing next year. If they even decide to come next year.

No, I must not think of that. we must make do with what we have, and what we have is a lot of stone and wood. There is much we can do with this.

11th Timber, 5
I’ve designed a simple perimeter wall as a first line of defense against potential invaders, as well as mechanisms for traps. Though we lack a military, we shall not be defenseless.

15th Timber, 5
We have run out of booze due to the construction of stills being halted so hauling can continue. I’ve designated some of the new migrants as specialists and revoked their hauling duties to help give them focus. Winter has frozen the brook and nearby ponds solid. It is imperative we have drinks!

1 Opal, 5
The workshops have expanded to provide a greater breadth of services, and the wall has been completed. All that remains is to construct the bridge.

20th Obsidian, 5
Udil has settled into the role of Woodcrafter very nicely, and has accepted the title. The sheer quantity of good we are producing makes me very optimistic for the next trade caravan.
I’ve been observing the statues we’ve been producing. At first they were simply animals, but now I find images of giants, Cyclopes, and a forest titan, all who seem to be wandering The Bent Jungle...

23rd Obsidian, 5
The plans are complete. If it is wood we have to work with, then it is wood we shall utilize.

Spring has arrived. I’ve assigned Atir the position of militia commander. It is mainly an honorary title at this point, but one that shall be changed before the year is out. Avuz has been assigned to the new project.

3rd Slate, 6
Avuz has decided to hold a party at the chert table in the dining hall. I suppose out first year together is worth celebrating.


14th Slate, 6

Zaneg suddenly began speaking in a unknown language, dropped the rock he was carving, and began shouting ownership of his usual workshop. She gathered a few rocks from the nearby stockpiles before running off deeper into the fortress to gather a gem. Once returned, she began working furiously, muttering “amgutid Zes Vumshar”.

Astesh organized a party at the chert table. Without more mining, the work has slowed to a crawl. I must bypass the cave system for now if I am to proceed to where metals supposedly lie.

”amgutid Zes Vumshar” turns out to be a schist earring, which translates to "Speakutters the Brand of Gloom". Zaneg is satisfied with the work, though she has no recollection of making it. It’s worth 7200. It’s made of schist, encrusted with chert, has hanging rings of yellow jasper and menaces with spikes of schist. On the item is an image of The Crazed Meteor the black metal slab.

Given the massive abundance of clay, I’ve ordered what lies on the surface to be gathered up. No sense in just leaving such a potentially useful resource.

There is also a buildup of corpses in the dining room due to Aban’s enthusiasm for hunting. I’ve designated a reduse stockpile and a butcher’s shop outside. Hopefully that will deal with the miasma.
It appears it is less hunting and gathering than it is the animals starving to death in the grassless underground. I’ve directed all animals still alive to be put out to pasture.

3rd Hematite, 6
The miners move with a frightening pace, having achieved Legendary status. I’ve also discovered a statue of myself. I’m having it placed in my office at once!

Another deep cavern. I’ll have to seal this one off as we proceed deeper, but this may become useful for locating more metals and providing living quarter.

A masterpiece statue has been created memorializing our arrival and the foundation of this settlement.
Likot has given birth to a child, Endok Stskosavuz(Razormine)! This is the first of the second generation of dwarves in Glazedbeard!

Autumn has come, and hopefully the trade caravan with it. Progress in the deep has been slowed by the caverns, and we’re having to construct floors to continue. Nonetheless, we are making progress.
Stodir has been possessed! He claims a mason’s workshop, then dashed to the stockpile room for stone and other supplies. He rushed to the Trade Depot and grabs.. the steel bar? I suppose it’s best we hadn’t used it, but to what end? He rushes out soon after placing the bars in the shop.

Stodir will have to continue unsupervised. The merchants have arrived, and Kumil Nanirmeng of Ransackedmine with them. They shall not find our trade goods lacking this year.
Inbgiz will be our broker this time, as they have more experience in trade than I. I’ve also assigned Kivish Dumatiklist as the chief medical dwarf. We should make a hospital soon, if only for the security.
Stodir has gathered all his items and begun to build. I wonder what the last item was.
We have so many statues I’m only marking our lower quality ones for trade. The rest shall be put on display for all to enjoy. Suck is the fruits of dwarven craftsman ship!
3 wagons. Let us hope they bring metals.
Stodir created a chert throne, Mirstalanzish. Beautiful and practical. Stodir has created almost every statue in the fortress, this will be a sight to behold. It is a pity he remembers nothing of it. It’s worth 42000. It looks perhaps a tad simple, but it is amazingly crafted nonetheless. “The velvety Alchemies” I’m placing it in the dining room for all to see.

They have plenty of room on their wagons, and a good quantity of metal. We clean them out and still massively outdo their value, so we pick through what we desire. I feel a warm satisfaction at the fruits of this settlement’s labours. We take out pick of weapons, armour, glass, and some meaty delicacies. They will prioritize us next year, I am sure.

Drinks are a high priority for the mountainhomes, as are rings, earrings. And cut gems. We shall have these for them next year, we have plenty of plants to work with. There are untapped industries waiting. They will be back.

2nd Timber, 6

   Ïngiz Atuleral was wandering the wood stockpiles in the inner courtyard in the cool dawn of the
autumn morning. Hundreds of logs had been brought within the walls, waiting to be turned into more
 furniture or crafts to sell to the next caravan. The scope of the operation was far more massive than
had been anticipated, and the stockpiles were almost full despite dozens of logs still lying outside the
walls. It had certainly taken the trade caravan by surprise, though the sheer quantity of crafts and
statues had left them more pleased than amused.
   “Those weren’t even the best ones,” Ïngiz smirked. The few masterpieces they’d kept had begun
 to decorate the central shaft of Glazedbeard, and their beauty was a small comfort in the rough halls
and bare rooms. Still, they never lacked for food and drink, as long as you liked plants. She hoped that
 her new position as broker would net her a proper office soon, and perhaps some of that water buffalo
 grazing beyond the northern wall.
   The clatter of massive logs broke into her thoughts. Sighing in frustration, she began searching
for the culprit.  A single copper eye stared back, several meters too high, and far too big. Cyclops.
   “CYCLOPS!” She shouted, her inventory forgotten. Shouts of alarm spread through the fortress,
 but getting indoors was not her concern. This Cyclops, wearing barely enough to qualify as clothes,
was going to pay. Closing the distance, Ïngiz swung wildly, missing but managing to jump away from
the massive humanoid’s counterattack and lash out at the offending fist, solid nails scraping the thick
 skin. She dodged the second attack, her blood rising.
   The Cyclops looked thoughtfully at the forming bruise. “How fragile we are...” The copper eye
focused on the dwarf defying her. “Begone fear!”
   “Fear this, bright eye!” Ïngiz shouted, landing a good blow in on the left leg, jumping back out of
 reach as a fist the size of her head blew past. The next blow fell short and Ïngiz seized the opportunity
 to get a good strike in on the Cyclops’ arm, smirking at the bruise. The right arm was pulled back and
the left one struck forth at the offending fist.
   The force causing Ïngiz’s hand to explode, splattering the pair with blood and gore. The dwarf fell
 back screaming, her bloodlust gone. She kicked at the grasping hands as she tried to get away, only to
 feel herself lifted into the air as the Cyclops grasped her right ankle. There was a brief moment of
bending before the joint failed with a crunch.
   The Cyclops dropped the crippled dwarf to the ground. Ïngiz heard her speak but a few words
as the giant fist crushed her skull.
   “Death... This is truly horrifying.”

    Aban Kosothétol (Palacepasses) heard the screams over the western wall and began to run.
It was uncommon for dwarves to scream in pain., but it wasn`t until the screams were suddenly cut
off that despair gripped his gut. He turned the corner of the main gate, the drawbridge still lowered
as dwarves that had been stockpiling supplies rushed in, their expressions darkened with fear.
The Cyclops was standing in the middle of the northern wood stockpile, fresh dwarven blood
splattered across her fist and face, mixing with the spittle dripping down her round chin.
    His bronze crossbow was empty, but far from useless. Dwarven crossbows were more versatile,
and designed to be used as a club when the bolts ran dry. It gave them a significant advantage over
flimsy Elven bows, which were useless once the arrows ran out. Though for all his training, Aban was
not sure about their efficacy on the cyclopean race, but there was no time to hunt for ammunition.
The Cyclops turned to him as well, her tan skin glistening with blood and sweat. A simple smile
crossed her mouth.
    “Thisrid nguteg Fikoddurad. Råsh awaits you.” The pair charged at each other, bronze crossbow
against bloody fist, both shining in the morning light. The first pass resulted in no contact, but soon a
deadly dance began. Dwarven skill began to triumph over size, strikes and kicks bruising the limbs and
opening small wounds. Each strike from the Cyclops met only thin air as Aban dodged around the piles
of wood. Dodging under a strike, Aban lashed out with the crossbow, opening a small gash. The Cyclops
growled in frustration and charged, catching the dwarf unawares. Grinning in triumph, her arm lashed
out to grab the tiny being.
    The dwarf was back on his feet in a heartbeat and out of reach before the fingers could close. His
breathing was up, but a furious grin was on his face. “You’re tricky, nguteg. I won’t fall for that twice.”
    The dance resumed at a more furious pace. The cyclopean was now covered in small cuts and bruises,
the bronze crossbow repeatedly leaving its mark. There is a brief moment of instability as a log rolled
beneath Aban, and the fist of the cyclopean connected with the dwarf’s face.
    “I am Torch Couragetimes, dwarf. You will fall as your friend did.” The cyclopean’s voice was laced
with smugness, though her breathing was laboured.
Aban spat out his four top front teeth. “I am Construct Palacepasses, cyclopean, and you are PISSING ME
OFF!” With a sudden burst of speed he jumped onto the arm and leapt to Torch’s head, missing teeth
visible as his jaw opened wide and latched on. Torch’s eyes glazed over as her legs gave out and she fell
back unconscious, a small avalanche of logs heralding the impact. With a mouthful of dense brown hair
Aban shook his head vigorously back and forth, ripping hair and flesh. Maintaing his grip, he mumbled out
through a bloody mouth. “Mothram nguteg,” and brought his bronze crossbow down on the skull.
    The toughness of the skull was proving difficult to crack even dozens of strikes later. Fresh recruits
were dashing to aid Aban, adding their fists to the onslaught. Fourteen fists and a crossbow rained down
mercilessly, covering Torch in bruises. The Cyclops only gained consciousness to scream and cry in agony,
but the blows were unable to do any more than bruise. Soon the dwarves began to tire, and the
cyclopean’s wounds began to fade. Sweat drenched Aban’s body, his jaw released and crossbow a bloody
blur. It couldn’t end like this. They’d come so far. They had no weapons that could penetrate the thick skin.
It was all fists, feet and crossbow.
    There was a brief flash of bronze, and blood gushed force from Torch’s skull. Obok Channelcrushes
gave his bronze shortsword a twist, the fountain of blood coating his face in blood and gore. “Sorry I’m late;
Atír froze up at the Trade Depot.”
    “Just... finish this,” said Aban.
    “Gladly,” replied Obok, and cleaved off the head of Litast Couragetimes the Glittery Torch.
