I don't mind al-Malik traits, nor do I mind traits of other houses. From what I saw, the way the houses are personalised in the mod appears to be made with traits in mind.
Al-Malik has got such traits as it does, but e.g., its nobles are the most profitable (and not very good at combat), they've got house-specific ships and - like other houses - composition of the starting entourage.
I think all together it makes them into this economically strong, otherwise lacklustre faction.

By the by, is there a way to e.g., hire more of the various minor houses units?

Perhaps you remember, when we were wrapping up our last game, this guy showed up advertising his mod. This is it.
If you haven't had a chance to look at it, give it a go first. It's very different from the regular vanilla and Nova stuff.

The house-specific units? No, like nobles, you start with all you ever get.
I think in theory you could hack the data files to add a unique building, e.g. "Hazat Barracks" where one could recruit Dervishes, but alas, it is not to be.

Crashes everytime I try select a tech research.

I think the game is just too old guys... :(

Works fine on my super duper windows 7.

Did you try just flat downloading everything from his site and creating a separate folder from any other EOFTS for both the game + Reality Mod + Emperor Wars?

I can live with keeping everyone's traits the same. What do you think I should drop from Hawkwoods defaults?

For the Plague option I think switching it off actually only prevents a unit or city from developing the plague if it's starving. Otherwise the Plague Bomb still exists in ruins and is buildable/usable.

[EDIT]
House specific units I believe we are unable to reproduce. However units like Brother Battle, the Manifest Light Legion, House Justinian, Ur-Obun, House Xanthippe, Cyber-Vorox etc. are producible with the right technology.

It likes to crash if you cock-up the install. Make sure you install everything in the right order.


For the plague, I'll let you guys decide. I like the idea of it, but if it fucks up the game, especially if rebels can spawn with them (can they?), then maybe it's better to let it go.

Plague bomb rebels (from alien ruins mostly) are definitely a thing. I triggered a separate plague on Aragon by attacking some of them in the last game.

I tried a quick single player game with Plague off and just attacked every alien ruins I could find, the plague bomb still appeared and infected the attacking units and everything nearby. The only thing we can influence with the plague option is starvation turning into plague it seems. Which is fine by me if everyone wants to turn it off, I think we already have the house rule of "don't be a dick by starving units deliberately" though.

The only time I've seen the plague bomb is one specific set of random alien ruins spawn. The other two (as far as I know) is a set of xyll warbeasts/warlocks and the other pure Symbiot units. Regular ruins will never have it. I have no idea if the Church/League possess any.

I guess plague can stay on in that case. The turn 8 rebel plague bomb will just have to be something we learn to deal with.

In other news, we've lost Ghazkull as well? I guess if there's no one on Bay12 interested, we could try recruiting from the steam group.

I was wondering how many others received the personal invite.

Too bad you only have the Loser houses available.  Testing my install now...

I sort of like the sense of discovery that comes in Random starts.  This mod lets players engage in merc wars prior to building an industrial base.

More planets yes.  But crap planets, at least from the lore.  They also appear to be the closest to the unclaimed planets, although they are probably unclaimed for good reasons.

EDIT: Eh, I guess they aren't too bad.  Plus, every noble is escorted by two prostitutes, and I can't argue with that.

My experience in Win8 is much the same as maniac's in 7 - although on my last machine I got it working on 7 (albeit not w/o a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth first). If I were more patient I'd try to see if my 7 laptop could take it - a game of EFS with you crusty lot would be a treat - but I'm inclined to think it would be too much pain for something as drawn-out as this, so to the peanut gallery I go.
