Less advanced simulation?
« on: June 16, 2015, 02:03:58 pm »

I heard that the simulation during gameplay is less advanced than the world generator for performance reasons. Is this true? Does the world grind to a halt after the generation is finished?

I'm pretty sure that changed with the version 40.xx updates. In prior versions the world was more or less completely static minus whatever you killed.

If it did change, how advanced is the simulation now? Is it on par with the world generator or is it simplified?

It's still much more simplified.

As I understand, a lot of data is basically thrown away or at least offloaded into much less accessible format than just keeping it all in memory while in general play.  (Loading files from hard disk in play is a major lag source.)

I remember Toady talking about how battles always go the attacker's way in play unless you personally are there, now.  I'm not sure if that's been rectified yet.

40.16 was specifically released to address that issue.

This is disappointing. I was hoping the amazing generation ai would extend to the gameplay. Maybe in the future.

Uh, I thought a lot of this was abstracted away and then I walked into a town which had been sacked and had corpses impaled on stakes, some of them still had blood on the ground around them.

Could you not find previous adventurers like this outside goblin towers? Not sure if that is still in now the goblin settlements are different.

Maybe, but I had never been to this town, it was what surprised me about it. "I see dead people, but me no remember being here before. How this happen?"

If you take a look at legends every couple of years you'll see that civs are sending out parties to reclaim ruins, fighting wars, building new forts and cities, executing their enemies in various gross ways (the remains of which can be found in adventure mode). Abandon a hapless bunch of dorfs and they'll form a bandit gang or go and reclaim a nearby cave (again go find them as an adventurer if you like).
I imagine a lot of this is going on in periodic updates rather than realtime but there is definitely stuff being simulated throughout the world.

I don't believe your unclear expectations were the standard for the 0.40+ release. While there were only a few things that were not activated at this time (e.g. megabeast invasions and army battles), there is birth, death, marriages, site foundation, reclaims, successions, appointments, invasions, patrols, banditry, and more. All of these things take place during play on top of the already complex game that is DF. That was the whole point of the "World Activation!" release.

Hardly disappointing.

...Nobody ever said otherwise?

Read the damn release notes, especially for 0.40.01 and 0.40.16.
