Poor Man's Well - Gathering water from ramps
« on: June 15, 2015, 01:57:59 am »

So I thought I'd trade my traditional well for a Roman style bath house.  I created a ramped room that runs about three levels deep and I filled it with water.  I made the whole area a water source.  Everything went well until the first step of the ramp went dry and now there are notices of "no water source".  So I have a puzzle, why isn't water being gathered from the rest of the ramp?

Because designations don't cross z-levels?

Try adding additional designations at the lower levels, see if that helps.

Yes, as Albedo says, water source designations require the dorfs to actually be able to reach the water with their buckets. Thus, his recommendation of designating the next level down is sound. However, I would recommend building a floor out to the middle of the basin and build a well there. The well will work through multiple water levels (there may or may not be a maximum of some large number of Z levels, such as e.g. 20). This will also avoid the infection risk of muddy water. That way you'll both have a well and a bath!

The multi-level zone selection was the key.  Thanks!  ... and good advise on the muddy waters.

np, glad it helped!

And, yeah, make the "bath" into a well asap - not that hard, a starting fortress doesn't stay that poor for long. ;)

I always make my "wells" with a ramp so any accidental fall victim has a chance to get out.

Well if it makes you feel better, after my last visit from the local wildlife -- you've just saved an orphanage. :D

There is a priority for doing things, and if you embark with even a little booze, digging a well/water source is not your top priority. ;)
