Post Modern Age 2030

......................................can swords still be a viable weapon?
Laser swords can always be viable weapons.

Scientifically speaking, early spaceships will be fighting at a distance of at most about ten kilometers. Making boarding actions feasible. And due to the thinness of initial hulls and the relatively low speeds, it'll be possible to use boarding pods. The thinness of hulls will make bullets a bad idea as well. And the close quarters will make melee much more viable.

Ah, you'll be fine using firearms. It'll take an hour or so for the hull to depressurise to a level that you'd have to worry about it. And you'd still be in a spacesuit too.

An hour is a very very small time in terms of space combat. Most engagements will likely take place over a span of days. Good luck getting picked up.

Eh, just seal off the room and you'd be fine.

Besides, it's not as if you're going to be far for anywhere that can pick you up :P

Currently, *now* we have 3 for post modern, apparently I can't count, well I already knew that.
One for Victorian.
One for medieval.
2 for Classical Age/Bronze Age

I'd start writing up a detailed biography of your nations.  Looks like we're going Post-Modern.

You design your empire like this:

Name:Insert Name Here

Trait:
Trait:
Trait:
(Optional Negative Trait):
(Optional Postitive Trait):
Spoiler: Description (click to show/hide)

Bonus points for a long and detailed history.  No minor countries, just 6 empires.  I want it to be simple.  Traits can be anything positive from Island nation to large military.  Or take a negative trait and get an extra trait.  Only one of those.

I'm going to bed now, checking in the morning.

((There appear to be four Post Modern votes.))

Name: Google. Lunarikan Technocracy.

Trait: Science Driven. ((General Science Bonus. Cultural idolizing of science. Scientists are the new superstars. Fuck athletics. The nerds be in charge now.))
Trait: Transhumanistic Culture. ((Biological/Cybernetic augmenting research gets a boost.))
Trait: To Spaaaaace! ((Culture is very much interested in space exploration, other planets, black holes, and just space in general. Bonus to space related research.))
(Optional Negative Trait): No Cultural Sense Of Morality. ((Probably rather bad for PR with other civs.))
(Optional Postitive Trait): Science Isn't Held Back By Morality. ((Otherwise immoral experiments are perfectly fine here~ Did someone say unethical cloning experiments? Come on over!))

That's put us at a split, and technically it's four votes for sci-fi so...

Anyway, I presume this is taking place on a planet with different geography to earth or...?

Name: The Mother's Republic of Istania
Trait: The Last Few Drops: The lifeblood of the Earth is ours to inherit, and to use with utmost care. The last oil reserves on Earth belong to Istania, as do many other vital resources found in the area.
Trait: Sacred Gaia: The Earth is sacred, and shall be treated with the respect it is due. Bonus to environmentally friendly research and construction.
Trait: Deus Machina: The Mother was killed. But She can return to us, given time, and faith. Bonus to computer technology and AIs in particular.
Negative Trait: Fanatics (Purity): The human form is sacred. One must not defile it. Biological or genetic enhancement is taboo. Regrowth of limbs for medical purposes is less so.
Positive Trait: Fanatics (Drive): We do The Mother's work, and She rewards us both here and after. Excellent work ethic and motivation means more efficient industry and agriculture.

I was assuming that AI literally are about to start being a thing, same with biological intelligence enhancements and uploading minds. The technological singularity is due in 2030. That's when the first S1 mind should be created. Give or take a few years.

My civ gives zero fucks about other civs. They see the planet is dying and they've as a culture decided to get the hell out of dodge~ No need to bother terraforming if you just adapt to the local environment.

Well, but that's the thing, Kevak.

I don't think a Singularity is as simple as 'ope, self-improving AI, no need for us to do anything'. After all, humans can self-improve.

So, Singularity? Not so much. AIs being plausible but not quite a reality? That's more what I'm thinking. Thus all the 'supposedly' and the like in the description. Technology grows fast don't get me wrong, but it doesn't make leaps like that that fast unless there'a a dire necessity. As in like a literal war happening. And a big-ass one.
