So, gentlemen, which sphere do you prefer? Life, or death? Maybe we can even reanimate bodies with the sphere of life if we are creative about that. After all, we are giving life to something, right? I'm personally inclined for life, because it tends to make our followers more useful.
I say Life. As stated, our Magic sphere will be adequate for manipulating soul-weaves. (I assume Death would be able to do so more easily, especially stealing enemy souls. Probably also better for going the afterlife route.)

I also say Life but it is important to explain that Death is not bad. It's the ciiiircle of liiiiffe!

Also, update will probably be put off until tomorrow or later today if I finish earlier than expected. My arm has been OK'd for art (actual full art, not light / loose style scribbles like I do for this) so I've got a bit of catch-up to do for work today.

I vote for either soul or dream weaving for the magical affinity that we give to our first mage.

I vote for diplomacy or charisma for our next sphere. Trading with the other races will greatly accelerate our technological advancement and deter them from killing us.

Theoretically, we could give intelligence to a corpse and keep it alive with life magic, or give people massive tumors, so I am against (-1) picking up death as a sphere.

Yeah, but life can be just as lethal and can grow our crops. Plus, death is generally associated with evil, and will probably give us a penalty in diplomacy (would you ally with a death cult (outside of war)?).

I am +1 to either Death or Life as the next sphere.  In a tie, I go Death.

And yes, soul or dream weaving as the first trick to teach mages, with an emphasis on souls.

Dream has to be first since Soulweaving is both high level and we won't know shit about it until a Believer dies. But astral projection will be hella useful for when we inevitably go to war.
