...what if one of the times you 'talked' to a cat or dog, you unknowingly sold your soul to them?

Hah! "Unknowingly".

In the days when Sussman was a novice, Minsky once came to him as he sat hacking at the PDP-6.
“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

I'd hate to think the incantation to give away your soul was a phrase like, "D'aww, who's a sweet kitty? Yes, d'ohhhh, I love kitty."

Souls don't work like that. They can only be knowingly and freely given. Can't accidentally your soul to a cat. Nor can something steal it.

Or maybe they do, and that's just what soulless creatures think to console themselves.

Or maybe the concept of "soul" is a mortal creation born from suppressed existential dread and an unconscious desire to be special and unique, and the whole conceit of selling one's soul to a less than benevolent entity is a metaphor for accepting that one is finite and objectively insignificant; the only devil is yourself.

...

Naaah, can't be.

Well, I am not so much concerned with the thought itself, but with the connection between the thoughts.

Since there is no such thing as genuine immortality (Even HeLa cells aren't TRULY immortal), the statement "We are all going to die" is quantitatively true-- Yes, if we are alive now, at some point in the future we will all have perished.  It is a matter of fact true statement.

The kicker is how it can be derived from contemplating ants at a cosmic picnic. That's the puzzler.

Are you absolutely sure you're not unknowingly selling your soul to Satan all the time?

"...what if one of the times you 'talked' to a cat or dog, you unknowingly sold your soul to them?"
==> "a i t m s y e to a n l s l soul"
==> "I sell my soul to Satan."

He'll be collecting soon enough...

If I don't notice when I sell my soul I question what good it's doing me anyway...
