Mandrills, King of beasts.
« on: December 04, 2007, 01:35:00 pm »

Mandrills, Every year there is a small invasion of 6 Mandrills, normally they are no problem, but this year, they took down my sheriff and a wrestler, one of the mandrills became named, them a squad of 2 (count 'em, 2) swordsdwarfs came in and murdered them, currently  i have 3 in cages and i'm attempting to butcher the corpses before they go rotten and my fortress is buggered over with miasma.

thoughts?

Not much to say, sounds to me like you've got it pretty well under control. More traps at the doors? Marksdwarfs on rotation to back up the traps? Chain some dogs there too?

Mandrills can be a bit of a pain. Mostly I just tend to make sure my stockpiles are inside ASAP and that every entrance to my fortress can be locked down when I see them on the map.

But if you think *they're* bad, try dealing with a population of *forty-two hippos*, not including calves.

elephantine horror from .22? I got the game at .33a, please inform me about this... elephant-y thing. Or whatever.

That happened to me in my newest fortress. In my other ones I had a problem with Rhesus Maqetrsfes, or however you pronounce them. I usually go "Rhesus Ma-" and then finish that word with a gagging noise. I'm not sure what to do, between the fire imps running around, the freaking gibbons, the mandrills, the elephants, and the gorillas.

They're elephants, need he say more? King of the [land-based] beasts.

I dont care what you people say is the most terrifying creature, the dwarf's natural enemy always has and always will be the elephant.

Screw your carp/giant cave spiders.

I kind of wish Toady hadn't nerfed elephants.

They were cool. If a little murderous.

And I mean a lot murderous.

Yeah, I kind of miss the old elephants, that would run around and trample your guys to death.  We still have the skeletal ones though, which are twice as fun   :) .

I think the Boatmurdered archive shows all the best of 0.22 ...including murderous elephants.  :D

Maybe Toady DID regret nerfing elephants, so he created carp?

If you want to mod your own old-school elephants, go to the raw entry (I believe it's in creature_large_tropical.txt) and add [LARGE_PREDATOR] and [RECKLESS] to the elephant entry. I can't remember if you have to gen a new world or not afterwards. Mwahah.
