Sunset

Part One: Activation

Part One: Activation
A dozen people stand in the sparsely decorated office. Behind the desk sits Nihilius, your manager and commanding officer, with all pretence of being a Throne-counting adept cast aside. He raises his dataslate and begins to read: “The ghostfire caravan also reports seeing black smoke rising from the site of Stern Hope. They were not able to ascertain the cause of the smoke as they did not wish to deviate from their course. This did not affect the delivery of the ghostfire tithe.” He deactivates the dataslate and looks up at his fellow inquisitorial agents, “As you know, four days ago Seer Aristarchus left for Stern Hope with a team of ten acolytes to attend the consecration of the cathedral. Last night he failed to check-in over the vox. There are many ways we could explain this that wouldn’t warrant intervention but it is not our job to assume. We must be certain.

“Eizen, Quellus, Larl, Grendal. You will stay here and monitor vox transmissions and incoming reports for any information that may be relevant to this situation. Ravion, Meta, Hack, Karna, Novus. You will travel to Stern Hope with another long-range vox unit and report what you find.”

He crosses his arms behind his back. “Are there any questions?”

Karna idly span her pistol on her finger, speaking in the unpleasant slang that emerges on any hiveworld.
"Yeah, I got some questions, boss. There any ideas on what the problem could be? Disgruntled natives? Xenos? ...the Archenemy?" At the word, she made a quick aquilla.
"If it was something unfriendly, and it was moody enough to bite twice the hammers we have here, things could get troublesome real quick."

Ravion looked over at the hiver.  He had served on a void-ship so was familiar with odd slang, whole decks could have their own sub-languages, it was a fool who saw only the uncivilized nature and ignored the intelligence hiding in those words.  Especially one like Karna.

"If something attacked it would be not for throne's sake.  The ghostfire tithe would be far easier to convert to cash then raiding a settlement and less defended then Stern Hope proper.  We should assume it is either an accident or something outside simple rebellion or banditry."

He was tapping both hands on the desk, an annoying habit picked up somewhere.

"We can make a decision on the ground, but assuming the Vox disruption is something more sinister, what should we prioritize, lending aid or reporting back?"

"Missionary-Abbot Orland Skae requested an Inquisitorial investigation citing suspicious disturbances. Judging from the report these disturbances could be psychic or warp-based. The Seer also reported a corpse that may have moved of its own accord."

"Your primary goal is to assess the situation and inform us of your findings. After you've accomplished that you are to assist the Seer."

Meta raises her head nervously before taking a breath and addressing Nihilius. A burst of binary static precedes her words.
"Is there any more information to be had about the situation? The level of integration the blessings of the Omnissiah have reached among the populace? Past irregularities recorded here?

((Second bit is asking about technological level of planet.))

"The Army of the Voice is passing through the hills to the north of Stern Hope. They may be as violent as any other Iocanthan nomad group but Vai Seth is too pious to attack a cathedral. These 'suspicious disturbances' are a recent occurrence, other than that I can't find records of anything unusual.

"Iocanthos is a feudal world, were it not for the Imperium the warlords of Iocanthos would still be shooting at each other with black powder weapons, some still do. They don't make the weapons or ammunition, however, they trade ghostfire pollen for these things. Outside of Port Suffering, The Abbey of the Dawn, and, to a lesser extent, Stern Hope there is little high technology to be found."

But they still respect technology and the creed to an extent, interesting.

"We should try and trace the route they used, see if we can find any clues as to where they are.  We should check in every 30 minutes, idle radio chatter about rustic landscapes and fancy hats just to confirm where we are."

This world was one full of opportunities, it was a pity his family could not come and sweep up some of it.  Others might have the same idea.

"And a cover story, how about a hunting party for sport, we picked up the mechanist while sheltering in an ancient communications station and he asked to follow us to our destination.  This is a cover of course; our real goal is to scout out buyers of advanced farming equipment and vehicles for a trade mission which will be arriving in a few years time."

Karna shrugged.
"Do we need a cover story? Much as I love a good lie, we are going to have to ask after the hammers that got krumped, ad that'll give us away."
