The war is as much of a surprise to us as it was to you -- we were not consulted on the matter. But that said? The Romans are our allies. You are not. When it comes to choosing between them and you, you who have previously prepared to invade us, and are currently issuing an ultimatum to cut all our ties and to issue "reparations"? Well, it's hardly a choice. You say failure to comply will be tantamount to declaration of war, yes?

We'll do you one better.

The Karelian Coalition will not take sides in the current southwestern conflict. However, in the general interest of fostering peace and understanding, we'd like to point out that the confusion regarding AAI naval transport might be related to the circulating reports that spuriously place a Mongol fleet off Gibraltar, rather than a Roman one.

(OOC: Kashyyk did order one of his own fleets to the Strait of Gibraltar, by shifting his fleets in the Ionian, Tyrrhenian and West Med one step to the west. Then Haspen made a mistake where he instead moved the Mongol fleet from the Aegean all the way to the Strait, presumably making it look as if the Romans used an AAI fleet to reach 75. I pointed out the mistake in the OOC thread, but it hasn't been corrected.)

Belgian Empire:

With a chirp of a whistle, Belgian soldiers rushed toward the Khanate trenches. Eight whole units went against two. Khanate soldiers fought like lions and even managed to halve the enemy numbers and rout some - alas, the battle ended in Khanate's defeat a week later.

The Belgian Empire denounce the groundless aggression of the Roman Republic by the Khanate although we cannot say we are surprised by this latest exemple of mongoloid treachery. We urge the Ottoman Empire to hanour the terms of its alliance with the Roman Republic and declare war on the Mongols if they do not leave Sicily.

The Belgian Empire also express its concern to the Eastern Canadian State. In the interest of good relations with our Canadian friends, we were willing to ignore the Canadian weapons killing Belgian soldiers in the Steppes of Asia. However, the recent Mongoloid aggression makes us wary of the Canadian-Mongol connection. We are suspending military access to the Canadian troops until we receive assurance that we do not risk a backlash. We would also like the Canadian state to stop its trade treaty with the Khanate. We are certain our allies in the Karelian coalition would make up for the loss of trade.

Such a trade rearrangement would count as assurance against a Canadian attack.

We also propose that the Roman Republic and Corsica break their trade relations and each sign a new trade treaty with the Karelian coalition. Such a trade rearrangement would not cost them anything, but allow four more armies to be fielded against the Mongols.

His opulent majesty that is Sultan Mehmet VI decides to break the trade treaty with the Khanate and offers identical treaty to the Karelians.

Reborn Khanate:

Khanate marines land on and capture Sicily without problems. A port is built there while railroads are build across the giant steppes of Ukraine.

Corsica is not an independent nation.

Sardinia, however, is, and Sardinian President Renzo Aldebrandi... will say no to that proposition, actually. We have a hole in our trade thanks to the war with the Karelians, and we can just propose a trade treaty with the Karelians without cutting out the Roman treaty.

The Canadians point out that the Belgians are wearing their blinders here.  Did they forget that the Romans used Belgian territory to mount their offensive?  Did they forget that the Canadians and the Khanate are allied?  You are asking us to sever trade relations with our allies and establish it with their enemies; this would be a clear act of betrayal.

Would the Belgians end their relations with the Romans if the Canadians asked?  We do not think so.

The Canadians are in a tricky position due to its two allies being at war, and we ask that the Belgians respect our attempts to stay neutral in this conflict.  We would be happy to sign a Research treaty with the Belgians if they had the diplomatic capacity.


And a Canadian attack?  Did the Belgians forget that two nations have declared war on us?  How could we possibly plan the invasion of a third?
