It's a Wide Open World (Adventure SG)
« on: June 07, 2015, 08:55:25 pm »

You've spent your life in a small trade town near the river. You have lived these 18 years hearing stories from the many travelers and traders passing through and the sense of adventure has always intrigued you. You live in the tropical southern region of the river only a few miles north of the river Delta, you are however many days journey south of the Great Lake where the river begins and where snow falls and water freezes. There aren't many travelers from that far north but the few you've met never had a bad thing to say about the region besides it's harsh cold.

Today is your 18th birthday. You have spent most of the morning and some of the afternoon at work in the docks moving boxes from ships, talking to traders, cleaning the small sailing ship you and your friends have built together, and practicing hand to hand combat with an ex-adventurer. It's been a nice day as always. You get home and your relatives have gathered to celebrate your birthday, your parents have gifted you adventuring equipment and your other relatives have gifted other items.
Your grandfather has given you a ticket from one of his ships to travel half way up the river and your uncle has promised to adventure with you where ever you want to go.

TL;DR: You have lived at a dock near a river delta. It is your 18th birthday and your family's gift to you is to send you on an adventure. Your uncle will also be adventuring with you.

Before you leave you must remember, who are you?

(For deity just use what it is a god of not a name and the equipment is what you got for your birthday so that's not able to be changed, I'll allow Orc but you may have trouble talking to elves on your adventure)

(IIRC chaotic does whatever it wants, true does what seems best, and lawful does what seems right at the time. Correct me if I'm wrong.) (also going to use the new character sheet since it fits the setting better)

Oh yes that's right your name is John the elf, with no religious association.
Well it seems your ticket is for the next day so your uncle and you spend the rest of the night and next morning saying good byes and packing your adventuring packs and assorted other things. When the time to leave rolls around your uncle makes sure you are both on time. It's a little after noon and you have just finished eating one of your favorite lunches now it's time for a long trip up river. It will be the farthest from home you have ever been and you're excited.
Upon entering the boat you find that the captain is rather drunk and the people aboard look like criminals, druggies, homeless, or all of the above. It's scares you but your uncle puts his hand on your shoulder,"Look kid, if you can't handle a short trip with these people maybe we should stay home." You shake your head no,"I can handle this". You take a deep breath and find a clean-ish seat.
You take this time to look over your equipment a bit better and decide what you want to use, you know how to use a sword but you've never been in combat, you have hunted with a bow before but not that much, your friends and you have played with throwing knives and they aren't too foreign to you, but you find something that is. It seems one of your relatives snuck an extra item into your bag while you were sleeping, it's a wrapped book with a ribbon tied around it, it's from aunt Suzzie, a healer, with a note,"Don't forget your elven heritage". You untie the ribbon and take the cloth wrapping from it. It is a small spell tome, the title is a runic language but your aunt was nice enough to leave another note,"it's a beginers spell book", you flip through the pages but once again you can not fully understand what the words are, another note slips out from the front of the book,"I'm sure you skipped this note and are now fumbling through the pages trying to read it, well with this you have to choose which spells you want before you can learn them, the book translates the spell sections once you have decided, you get three choices of spells to learn out of the four in the book, I have a list on the back of this note with spell names, when you choose just hold those three spells in your head and the book will change into more understandable text". You flip the note over and it shows-
"Here is the list:
Frost-page3
Fire-page8
Summon small animal- page13
Heal minor wounds-page23
Have fun :) love aunt Suzzie"

Which spells do you choose?

You begin to think the words "Fire, Heal, Summon" the words repeat in your head "fire? heal? summon?" and a third time they repeat "FIRE HEAL SUMMON"... Weird. The book twitches a little during the process and you open it, the frost section is still runic but the other sections are written out in easy to understand words, there are drawings of hand movements and gestures for quick use of the spells or simply saying a specific ancient word, it's prenunciation is also written out for ease of use. You whisper the heal word while reading it and a rush of soft light green light emmits from your skin, you can feel a few cuts on your hands from the other day close. You look up from the book, no one seems to have taken note accept for the druggie who looks confused about the light. Your uncle looks at you with a smile,"I see you've found Suzzie's gift". You nod and continue reading.
After a few hours you have re-read the passages in the book several times and even practiced the healing spell a few times, even using it on some of the people around you to test it out. You don't try the others in fear of making a scene. Your uncle gets your attention when the boat stops,"Hey, James, we're here. Get your things and let's get going" You get out of the boat following your uncle. The air is noticeably more crisp, cold, and fresh... Almost smells like the pine and oak logs that you used to unload from sawmill shipments. You notice that you are at a small dock not unlike your home but the population seems to consist almost entirly of humans rather than the Kahjiit and elf mix in your town. This place is strange you think. Your uncle walks off towards the market,"I'm goig to grab us a bit to eat, why don't you begin talking to some of the locals, see if there is anything we can help with. Maybe talk to the town guard and see if any creatures have been harassing the people". You respond with glee. As he vanishes into the market you begin talking to people, some of the humans great you with scorn as though you were a diseased monster, others try to suggest small things they want you to do free of pay such as patching holes in their roofs or running errands, but when you ask a guard he read ponds after observing you for a moment,"You're a new adventurer, eh? Ya, we got a job fer ya. There be a pack of feral wolves up in the hills to the west of the town. 'Ey been huntn our sheep for awhile but no one has been able to ride us of em"

You go out to find your uncle with this information.
After a nice dinner meal of strange local fruit that you've seen in some shipments through your town you both go to a tavern house for the night. The locals in the bar area look disgusted at you but mind their own. Your uncle signs a ledger and informs you to do the same, he flips a gold coin to the barkeep,"One week rent" he says before you both make your way to a nearby room. You close the door behind you and he locks it. The room is rather dull but not bad, it's strange to you, not anything like your home. The room has stone and mortar walls with wood beams in the ceiling, the beds are set off the ground and have animal furs instead of woven blankets, there are is also a lantern in each corner lighting the room and a fire place on one wall with no fire in it but a small stack of wood next to it. Your uncle begins to start a fire,"Might want to test some of your equipment before tomorrow, make sure everything is in working order. See that wood plank on the wall that looks all torn up? *he jestures to a plank of wood with many slashes and stabs in it* out here people normally use that to see if their knives are going dull or take out frustration. You can use it to test some of your equipment, maybe throw your knives at it, take a few shots with your bow, test your sword arm, throw a spell or two at it, maybe even send your summoned animal after it"

You fire a few shots from your bow, the arrows stick but they don't seem to be extremely powerful, the bow is quick to draw so you can fire plenty of arrows in quick succession. The sword is heavy enough to splinter the wood a bit and sharp enough to leave a gash. You find you are a tad rusty at throwing knives but eventually you are able to throw them like a pro. Your leather armor and shield seem to be fairly new with no scratches or cracking pieces. The shield doesn't seem like it could take a bash or stab but could easily deflect a swing. You're uncle says maybe later you could upgrade your armor with chain mail on the outside to prevent swords from cutting straight trough the armor. You throw a fire ball at the plank but find that it dies right as it strikes the wood barely browning the surface. Your uncle comments,"That spell works better in close range, punch an enemy with an active fire spell and watch it sear their face or throw it at a wood shield when they are close to make the shield use less"
You summon your animal and an owl appears. The owl is light purple, blue, and white but also transparent almost like it's made of magical energy. You feel a bit drained after using the two spells right after eachother. The owl flaps around the room before deciding to perch on one of the lanters. Your uncle speaks up,"For each different size of summon animal spell there are two to five different animals that can be summoned. Not by choice of course. They'll leave after they die or after you unsummon them. Why not see what the other critters are?" You set the spell again and almost fall over as your legs get a bit wobbly from the drop in energy. A cat appears, it is red, green, and white with the same transparent look as the owl. The cat walks around, hisses at your uncle then jumps onto your bed to sleep. Your uncle laughs,"At least we don't have to feed the buggers".
You are feeling tired.
