So the options have no effect on the starting population?

The very initial starting population is all new creatures (generation 1), the options are to control how open slots get filled.  New is obviously gen 1 creature (with you as the creator), local is any creature in your pool (can be yours or others depending on whats in your pool), world is from the shared pool (typically others but yours can be up there too), and finally selected favors the creature you are currently controlling.

Okay, then I may have misunderstood how the pool works. I thought it was reinitialized every time I opened it from the main menu.

Haha not at the moment. I'm working on a graphic novel of sorts right now. How is the greenlight going???

Graphics novel is a great idea given your diverse skills!  Green light is at 85% although it's purposely vague as to what that means.  I did not expect this much support considering it's a simulation and not a proper "game".  That said if does get the greenlight I plan on developing a game around the evolving creatures.

Awesome :O I played with the idea of kickstarters and greelights for a bit, but ultimately I can't ever decide what I'm doing :P I'm excited to watch how it unfolds for you!

Actually I just got greenlit by steam?  Did not expect such an obscure genre to make it through and was really just looking for feedback.
