Made a new devlog video here. Part of the latest update is a terrain rendering overhaul. Some people seem to get really bothered by the blocky aesthetic.'

Also decided to just keep adding the stuff on the roadmap and worry about balance later.

Yearly necro! DF isn't the only DF-like coming to Steam, Embark will be on Steam early access in a few weeks.

Post about the temperature system coming in the next update.

Can't believe it's going to be 4 years soon...  :)

I did pick it up but haven't had a chance to try it out yet, sorry. Hopefully in the next week or two I can get you some feedback.

on a top end system it eats cpu and gpu resources as it stands needs optimisation

Yeah, optimization of course has a lot of work to be done still, but that it mostly for closer to release.

It is always going to be resource intensive though. Voxels with the ability to slice them by Z levels is always going to be more expensive than your normal action game, and simulating colonists is well, simulating colonists... The game is fully multithreaded, so it will eat all 32 threads of your i9 and it will enjoy it.

There have been people playing with upwards of 100 colonists and huge bases and the game runs fine for the most part.

Update 0.650 brings with it combat training buildings for both melee and ranged weapons, underground flora and fauna and improvements to cave generation, research overhaul (a Kenshi like system where you have multiple ways to collect research artifacts for advanced research), military squad uniform improvements (you can now assign food and drinks to your squads so they can go out on the map for extended campaigns), easy terrain texture modding, and more.

I realize I have been very really bad at communicating updates, and most people who had an eye on might think the game is dead. It's very much not dead, and slowly but steadily progressing towards full release!

New in 0.8 we have a visual overhaul (moving to the latest Unity High definition pipeline), new fire and simulation, overhaul of water and the room systems, new events (some involving flaming rocks), and many more changes.

With the new simulation system more or less all the systems are in place and stable. The pace of subsequent updates should improve. Based on player analytics, it is also a lot more playable than the last 0.750 update, which was sort of a disaster.

As usual I'm happy to discuss anything and everything about the game!
