It's your graphics. The HD 4600 is integrated graphics, not a dedicated GPU. Your lack of a dedicated GPU makes your games hang up.

The amount of RAM your integrated graphics can use is limited.

Have you set your integrated graphics settings to "high performance" yet?

Noticed something strange. The GPU temps are reaching 82C according to GPU-Z. There's no way that can be right. This laptop barely gets warm with serious use.
\OoO/ i dun even

The intel GPU is embedded inside the CPU's physical die. This means that you get the heat from both the GPU and the CPU on the same heatsink.

Sometimes you can increase the amount of system memory reserved for the embedded GPU by using the CMOS setup utility. See if there are any options in there to increase the graphics memory size. NOTE-- this will reduce the amount of RAM available for system use.

He's got 8 gigs, and Skyrim only needs about 4, so I think he's good . . . :P

That doesn't make sense. o.0 Unless his old craptop was a special order, the factory-default of that model has a ATI HD 4250 integrated chipset, even older and crappier than the Intel chipset in the new one. Of course integrated graphics are always going to equal shitty performance with pretty modern games, so eh. But yes, that's your culprit, and there's not much you can do unless you want to buy a new laptop or void your warranty trying a DIY job on that one. :/

Aurora on small monitors:
1. Game Parameters -> Reduced Height Windows.
2. Lock taskbar to the right side of your desktop.
3. Run Resize Enable

This almost makes me wonder if pure CPU based rendering wouldnt fix some of the problem for your problematical games. Perhaps something like swiftshader?

(Swiftshader is implemented as a custom version of D3D9.DLL that you put into your game's executable folder. When windows loads DLLs, it will load them from the game executable folder first, so it will supercede the system's actual D3D9 runtime dll. Swiftshader simply needs a simple drawing surface on which to display its output, and your integrated intel video should have no problems. I have an older i7 system, and I have skyrim. I am going to test out how well skyrim plays with swiftshader 3, and will keep you apprised.  In the past, the demo versions of swiftshader superimposed this annoying watermark on the screen. Long ago, I had a laptop that had precisely ZERO D3D support, so I used swiftshader as the primary D3D8/D3D9 runtimes. The watermark was removable with a hex editor by overwriting the raw RGBA bytes of the watermark with pure transparent pixels. :P I will see if swiftshader 3 is similarly pokeable.)

Well, skyrim runs like shit with swiftshader on my i7. At 800x600, on lowest quality, it runs at maybe 20fps or so.

Fallout 3 uses an older engine. I will see if it handles swiftshader better.

Nopey nope. Runs horrible.

Oh well. I tried.

Does it work at all? As near as I can tell SwiftShader is a d3d9 emulation, but a lot of games now will use d3d11, so would bypass swiftshader entirely.

It's not an embark so much as seven dwarves having a simultaneous strange mood and going off to build an artifact fortress that menaces with spikes of awesome and hanging rings of death.

Skyrim is D3D9 based.

Yes. It works. I get the silly little watermark in the corner. It runs like poop.

In fact, here it is running in a window.

a few games I have tried with swiftshader, just for S&G

SystemShock2 (with dark engine update)- Fairly playable.
Oblivion - Sluggish, but almost playable
Skyrim - not really playable
Starcraft 2 - DX11 title, does not work with swiftshader
Witcher enhanced edition - Runs at maybe 5fps? Graphical anomalies in menus.
Bioshock - DX10 title. Swiftshader does not work.
Divinity original sin -- plays at 5 fps. yay.
Kingdoms of amalur -- 5 FPS. Whee.

So yeah-- looks like full CPU rendering is not that hot. Possibly you could get playable FPS with really old games.
