Yes, you need to own base "Dawn of War" for Space Marines, Eldar, Orks and Chaos Space Marines, "Winter Assault" for Imperial Guard, "Dark Crusade" for Necrons and Tau and "Soulstorm" for Dark Eldar and Sisters of Battle to be available to play in multiplayer.
You can play all factions in singleplayer skirmish without owning the other games.
Relevant quote for the multiplayer aspect of you post :)

I might have mentioned this earlier but I'll do so again for the benefit of others; if you, like me, bought the series from retail stores when they first came out you can input the CD Key for "Soul Storm" into Steam to add it to your game list. This reduces the cost of the Master Collection since you already own that part of it.

You cannot, however, input the CD Keys for the other expansions or the base game. "Dark Crusade", "Winter Assault" and base "Dawn of War".

Funny, I could input the code for DoW just fine but not Winter Assault (I have the 'gold' edition that comes with both), though I haven't tried Dark Crusade yet... might do that now.
Supposedly you can e-mail them a picture of your CD and they'll send you a code or something, but... effort.

EDIT: when I said Soulstorm in my post I meant Dark Crusade, fixed it.

Ah, I believe it works for the Gold Edition as you've just found. I seem to remember reading someone else mentioning it as well.

The Steam retail CD Key list doesn't specifically mention it, but here's the list anyway.

In my post I was talking about the base "Dawn of War", the original box that was released in 2004, and the alone expansion "Winter Assault" that was released in 2005.

I think part of why the Gold Edition works with supplying the CD Key is because it is available in the "Dawn of War: Anthology" pack which includes it and "Dark Crusade" but not "Soul Storm".

Oh, we have a topic dedicated to Ultimate Apocalypse mod? Very good.

PTW. I have all the DoW games and also UA mod, nids + DH + DoC included and also that ram patch, ntfix or what was it. Didn't play the mod much though, just few quick small-scale skirmishes, but I'll be totally up for some online games.

So any idea if they'll ever craft a single player campaign? That would be awesome.
There is a mod called Titanium Wars which is a bit like UO. It adds lots of new units and even factions, though the scale of battles is a bit smaller than UO - for instance, UO lets you build multiple types of titans, where TW only has one per each side (if I am not mistaken). Why this is relevant to your question is the fact TW's game changes also apply to campaigns (you can get a version for Dark Crusade easily, Soulstorm one is a bit trickier due to some dispute on ModDB). The problem I have with TW in campaign mode is that while there are super units and even lots of normal units get damage upgrades, the HP of structure is also considerably higher. In practice that means, unless you immediately rush your opponent and even then hope for the best, nearly every match will boil down to a gruesome, bloody siege warfare. Which is, don't get me wrong, GREAT. But when you are playing campaign mode, having nearly every attack or defense turn into an hour(s) long slugfest, it can exhaust you pretty quickly. Still worth a try though, even if you ignore the campaign because there are few things it does differently than UO (there faction called Administratorium that UO doesn't have - apparently, you are a planetary governor, throwing waves of PDF and obsolete vehicles at your enemies, with the option to align yourself to various outer powers like Chaos, Tau, Space marines)

I have just finished installing all the mods and updates to the Steam version. If you have time we could organise a game now? PM me if you, and anyone else reading, wishes to join in for a match.

Oh, there's also the Daemons of Chaos faction that works with UA. Also, a mod manager that makes running all these things easier if you haven't got it already.

Well, I'm pretty confused now on how to actually start with the mod-necrons. Do they just make heavy use of free/cheap turrets, mini-generators, and builder scarabs with free reinforcements until you have a summoning core to build anything else with?

Added this to op, for ease of use:

Mod list for easy multiplayer: when playing this mod in multiplauer, you'll have to have everything identical to other players. To make things easy, that should include the following:
-main game (patched to latest via steam, you can get a steam key if you bought it on disk)
-main mod
-latest patch (1.8.2 as of 15/06)
-the three extra races (tyranids, deamons, inquisition), see moddb page for the correct links
-ntcore executable

Early Necrons is rather singular. Build the builder scarabs and reinforce them. Capture nearby objective points and build obelisks, generators and a turret or two. I would focus on getting the summoning core and upgrading the monolith so you can start building warriors. Power is everything and once you start rolling it becomes really difficult to stop you. Remember to upgrade the power generation on the generators.
Also, building a second and even third monolith means you can build even more generators which means even more power.

It's kind of; play defensive until about mid-game than start attacking. If you get to titan/relic units you're nearly unstoppable.

@Radio Controlled: There is also a small "Objectives Point" mod that's needed but it's included with UA. I think that's all that is needed.

So I had an idea for possibly making things a bit easier to setup matches.
The group from the 'Players to play AI War with' thread from awhile back have/had a steam group for getting together a group of people in one spot. We could use it for this game too, since we haven't used it in awhile that I know of.

Or could keep using PMs, that worked pretty well.

Well, so far a few games have been had between myself and Sinistar. Though we tried our best, the A.I rather brutally stomped us in all accounts. Tyranids on hard are really mean, along with Orks and nearly any other faction.

The mod has a lot of small settings that you can change for a game. I usually play with ones that double defensive turrets and wall health and turn off game enders for the A.I. so they can't drop nukes/warp storms/capillary towers. You can customise the game quite a bit using these, turning off vehicles, unit tiers, increasing population and resource generation or reducing them and research time, either just for the A.I. or for players as well.

Just as a note; Ultimate Apocalypse modifies the base game maps so they don't have draw distance fog to work with the increased zoom levels. Such maps are labelled with (Apocalypse) after the map name.

I was going to include a link to a map pack I downloaded in the past, but for the life of me I cannot remember the packs name. I could just upload my games multiplayer map directory in a .rar file if people don't mind the leg work of putting the files in the right folder themselves. I can give instructions if needed of course.

Me & Sinistar swept the floor with a pair of normal AIs, and then got beat up by a single hard Dark Eldar AI.

Hrm. Re: Necrons, does the latest version not have the attack scarabs? Looks like the version of UA I've had loitering around my computer for a while is a bit out of date, but it does, and, well.

Well. After a couple skirmishes to remind myself what the game's like, I'm currently wondering what you do to stop someone that's decided to direct their rally point at your base and right click on attack scarabs :V The things roll over turrets, upgraded listening posts, pretty much everything in the first tier or two of tau, eldar, or DE troops, so far...

Just mopped up two standard AIs doing pretty much nothing but spamming those things at 'em. It... it was kinda' sad. And a little chuggy, at the end. Since there was a like a dozen and change scarab squads drowning everything in chittery little bodies :V
